Forgotten Chicago Six Corners Walking Tour
As Chicago grew at a rapid pace during the early 20th century, neighborhood shopping districts began to spring up around the city. At first, many were small and only served the needs of those residing in their immediate vicinity. However, as transportation improvements occurred and outlying areas began to densify, many shopping districts grew larger and began to serve a more regional clientele.
Just as Schaumburg and Oak Brook are examples of present-day retail decentralization, Six Corners is an early 20th century example of this phenomenon. On this encore of one of our most popular walking tours, we will examine and discuss the history and evolution of the Six Corners shopping district. We'll look at remnants from the area's early history as a crossroads, as well as the beginnings of the streetcar era. The tour will examine evidence of the district's rapid growth and evolution, including modernist retail architecture such as Robert Heller's nearly intact 1940 former Straus & Schram store as well as storefront modernizations. Finally, we will discuss how the switch from the streetcar to the automobile caused Six Corners to transform and adapt to changing trends.
The tour will also examine the surrounding neighborhood, and will include the usual mix of overlooked oddities and more! Don't miss this tour of one of Chicago's most fascinating and intact outlying shopping districts.
