Antioch Drama Institute: Tools for Working with Children and Adolescents (20 CE credits)
Antioch University Drama Therapy program coordinator Bobbi Kidder, MA, RDT/BCT, is the instructor for this four-day course. This course will consist of five separate sections with guest presenters. Participants will learn to adapt a variety of educational and therapeutic approaches to work with children and adolescents, as described below.
Session 1: Understanding the Full Narrative: Enhancing Resilience through Drama Therapy Presenters Bobbi Kidder and Colin Ward Dates/Times: Sunday, July 19, 10 am 4 pm
Instructors Colin Ward and Bobbi Kidder share their vision of how Narrative Therapy and Drama Therapy combine, showing in particular, how stories are reshaped to incorporate resilience, strengths, self-agency, and personal integrity
Colin Ward, PhD, LMHC, is chair of the Mental Health Counseling MA program at Antioch University Seattle. His expertise in brief, strength-based therapies complements the narrative strategies approach.
Session 2: TF-CBT, DT, CAT in Residential Treatment OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Presenter Kelslan Scarbrough Dates/Times Monday, July 20, 10 am 12:30 pm
In this session Kelslan Scarbrough will show how three evolving fields of trauma informed care, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Drama Therapy, Creative Arts Therapies can work together with children in residential care. She will present an overview of trauma's effects on children's brains, emotions, and behaviors as well as sharing the techniques and course of treatment in the evidenced-based practice of TF-CBT. Finally, she will share several examples of interventions adapted for children and inspired by Drama Therapy and other Creative Arts Therapies.
Kelslan Scarbrough, MA, DT, MFTA, a 2014 Antioch University Seattle graduate, is a Residential Therapist for Navos' Ruth Dykeman Children's Center.
Session 3: Mandala and the Embodied Lights: Conveying DBT Skills to Young Clients Presenters Beth Donohue and Bobbi Kidder Dates/Times Monday, July 20, 1:00pm 4:00 pm
Among other skills present in its methodology, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), offers individuals insights on reducing stress by integrating validating strategies into their lives and environments. Instructor Beth Donohue unites DBT's core of mindfulness with creating a mandala design. Co-Instructor Bobbi Kidder reinforces those strengthened perspectives through Playback Theatre forms.
Beth Donohue, MA, ATR, LMHC is an Antioch University Seattle graduate in Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Art Therapy. She joined the faculty first as an adjunct and became a full time Art Therapy Teaching faculty at AUS in 2013. She has a robust private practice in which she frequently works with children.
Session 4: Using Myths and Fairy Tales in Drama Therapy with Children and Adolescents Presenter: Maggie Yowell, MA, RDT, LMHCA Dates/Times Tuesday, July 21, 10 am 4 pm
Myths and fairy tales offer symbolic meaning, while also providing a sense of safety and distance. In this session, Maggie Yowell brings her insights about working with children and youth who often have special needs including autism spectrum disorder, to her exploration of ways to incorporate myths and fairy tales into drama therapy sessions. Through experiential and collaborative exercises, including the use of storytelling, puppets and Playback Theater, participants will explore the power of myths and fairy tales to heal and transform.
Maggie Yowell, MA, RDT, JD, LMHCA, GMHC, MHP, RDT, is a 2013 graduate of Antioch University. She is a Registered Drama Therapist and a licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate who currently works as a Creative Arts Therapist for Multicare Auburn Medical Center and as a Clinician for Compass Health. Infused with the power of play, improvisation taps the intuition and opens the imagination. Found in approaches like storytelling, Narrative Therapy, and role playing, improvisation is also abundantly present in our daily lives, mirroring impromptu responses that occur in our daily interactions. Instructors Kidder and Davis will focus on ways that educators and Drama Therapists can utilize improvisation with students and clients. They will also emphasize the value of improvisation for the professionals themselves, as it enhances their own ability to listen, remain flexible, and ignite discovery.
