Pollinator Passion Weekend
Join us for a very special Pollinator Passion Weekend July 24-26, 2015 at WSU Snohomish County Extension, 600 128th St SE Everett, WA inside McCollum Park.

Friday 7-9:30pm
The event opens Friday evening, July 24, 2015 with "Bring Back the Pollinators!" featuring Rich Hatfield, endangered species conservation biologist for The Xerces Society with information on the state of our pollinators as well as advice on how to convert most any area of land into pollinator habitat.

Saturday 9am-4pm
Continuing on Saturday, July 25, you'll learn to identify, protect and track our native bumble bees! Learn several aspects of bumble bee biology. In addition to life-history and ecology, you'll learn which species are most at risk in our region, the threats they face, and what you can do to help protect them. Focus on identification of native bumble bees, as well as different techniques for surveying, observing, and photographing bumble bees, including instruction on how to participate in Bumble Bee Watch, a new citizen science project to track and conserve North American bumble bees.
In addition, several vendors will be there with products and books including bee houses, supplies for solitary bees, bumble bees, mason bees, and plants to attract pollinators.

Sunday 10am-1pm
Field trip!!!! Don't miss Sunday, July 26, for a few sunny (we hope) hours in the field lead by Rich Hatfield, Sharon Collman, and Dave Pehling. Focus will be live capture and release for identification of bumble bees and otherpollinators, as well as other interesting insects and spiders. Meadow location in Snohomish County TBA.

Speakers
Rich Hatfield, Endangered Species Conservation Biologist, The Xerces Society. He has authored several publications on bumblebees, including a recently published set of management guidelines entitled Conserving Bumble Bees. In addition to his work with bumblebees, he has investigated native bee pollination in agricultural systems in the Central Valley of California, and studied endangered butterflies in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Sharon J. Collman is the WSU Snohomish County Extension Educator for horticulture and integrated pest management. Sharon has extensive experience gardening to attract insects including restructuring her garden to entice local butterflies. She has authored a number of articles on butterfly gardening and is making her new garden pollinator friendly.

Dave Pehling is a long-standing extension professional who teaches about pollinators including mason, bumble, and honey bees. He has been co-teaching the Master Beekeeper's Apprenticeship Beekeeping Classes for five years and is a certified journeyman beekeeper. He keeps his own honeybees and experiments with mason bee and bumblebee nesting sites.

Come for one, two, or all three days worth of events. Everyone registered for the entire weekend or just the all-day Saturday class will receive one copy of Attracting Native Pollinators: Protecting North America's Bees and Butterflies by The Xerces Society. Additional copies of the book will be available for sale during the weekend for $30.
