Best-selling author Robert Putnam on restoring the American Dream
SAGE will host best-selling author Robert Putnam as its 2015 Visiting SAGE. Putnam, the author of Bowling Alone, the seminal work on the decline of social interaction in America, released a new bestseller this spring called Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, which looks at the growing barriers to upward mobility faced by unprivileged children and families. While in Portland, Putnam will share a personal and authoritative look at the growing opportunity gap in our country, how and why the American dream of opportunity is broken, and ways in which we can work to restore its promise.

Putnam is a highly-acclaimed professor of public policy at Harvard University who served as an advisor to three presidents. He has received the Skytte Prize, the most prestigious global award in political science, and the National Humanities Medal, the nation's highest honor for contributions to the humanities.

Our Kids has garnered significant praise as a deep examination into the future of our country, and the need for our civic leaders to reach across boundaries of party and ideology if we are to offer more opportunity to all American children.

SAGE is a Portland-based nonprofit organization that inspires people over fifty to give of their time, talent, and passion to create opportunity for younger and future generations. The Visiting SAGE speaker series inspires people to find new pathways to service and advocacy to improve opportunity for coming generations. Learn more at www.wearesage.org.
