See the beautiful new addition to Sonoma Valley Regional Park on this walk led by local writer and historical ecologist Arthur Dawson. The 29-acre addition on the park's north side has just opened for hiking, and this guided walk will provide a rich introduction to the area's history, beauty and significance. The site was purchased by the Sonoma Land Trust late last year and transferred to Regional Parks as an expansion of Sonoma Valley Regional Park. The former ranchland is a crucial piece of the imperiled Sonoma Valley Wildlife Corridor and offers panoramic views of the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Mountain, the Mayacamas Range, and San Pablo and San Francisco Bays. This easy-level walk is free and will cover about 1.5 miles. Parking is $7 or free for Regional Parks members.
Dawson's books include two local bestsellers--The Stories Behind Sonoma Valley Place Names and On Foot in Sonoma (coauthored with Rebecca Lawton). Arthur's column, "Stories Behind Sonoma County Place Names," appears monthly in the Press-Democrat. As an historical ecologist, he has collected oral histories, developed archives, and contributed field and archival research to local and regional restoration efforts.
