The California Mental Health Services Act (MHSA/Prop 63) requires agencies receiving MHSA funding to meaningfully include individuals with lived experience ("peers") in the creation and delivery of public mental health services. This is frequently accomplished by hiring peer staff to provide direct support and recovery services to public mental health consumers and their family members. While the MHSA's mandate to hire and retain consumer and family member staff is clear, the path to successful implementation of this mandate remains elusive. If employers do not know how to prepare and plan for the hiring of peers or how to adequately support them once hired, the success, growth, and continuity of peer-run services is at risk. W.I.S.E, which stands for Workforce Integration Support and Education, helps employers get it right no matter where they're at in this process.
Disruptive Innovation is the first annual conference specifically for employers in California's public mental health system that:
(*) currently employ individuals with lived experience (consumers and family members/peers); (*) have peer staff imbedded in their teams; (*) have peer employees co-located within their agencies; and/or (*) are contemplating or are in the process of hiring peers.
Disruptive Innovation features a full day of networking opportunities for peer employers to connect with and learn from one another. The conference incorporates engaging activities and dynamic speakers, including an afternoon workshop hosted by Matthew R. Federici, Executive Director of the internationally-recognized Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery. At the end of the day, attendees will leave with a better understanding of important factors impacting peer employment, useful tools they can apply in their workplaces, and contacts from like-minded agencies to share knowledge and experiences related peer integration beyond this conference. Conference attendees will enjoy complimentary breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks/refreshments.
