Fabio Mittino & Bert Lams - Long Ago: The Music of Gurdjieff and DeHartmann
Fabio Mittino is an Italian guitarist, active in Milan as session musician and with his group Fluon. Fabio released his first solo CD 'Resonance' with solo arrangements of music by Thomas de Hartmann three years ago. Bert Lams is known for his affinity with the music of J.S.Bach, and his arrangements of classical music for the California Guitar Trio. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Bert Lams conducted workshops for guitar students in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and Seattle."Nascent," his recent solo album features new arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for guitar and brings a unique twist to the classical guitar world. Fabio and Bert met in England, and were introduced to each other by guitarist Robert Fripp in 1997. They have been friends since, and have a common affinity for the music of Thomas De Hartmann, a Russian pianist who lived from 1885 until 1956. During his travels in turbulent times(the Russian Revolution) he wrote a series of ethnic and spiritual melodies with his teacher G.I. Gurdjieff. Bert and Fabio have arranged 15 of his pieces for two guitars. Not only are the pieces performed on steel string guitar with a pick, but they are also set in what's known as "New Standard Tuning"; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.
