Sam Amidon is the Vermont-raised son of folk musicians Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, and he's coming to us following a mainstage appearance at Wilco's Solid Sound Festival. In the words of the New York Observer, Sam is "the spokesman for the new, weird America." He was immersed in traditional music from his earliest days and, similar to Bob Dylan, the spokesman for "old, weird America," it's clear that American folksongs speak to him in a private language. Amidon deconstructs traditional songs, as well as contemporary songs from suprising sources (Mariah Carey, R. Kelly), and puts them back together with voice, guitar and banjo in a way that reveals their intentions to modern audiences. The sound is quiet, rhythmic, acoustic, complex, experimental and deeply penetrating. His newest album, Lily-O, is a collaboration with jazz guitarist Bill Frisell that was produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson (Bonnie Prince Billy, Björk).
