Featuring six award winning local LA film makers. Six short films representing a huge range of genres: Drama, Sci-fi, Comedy and a special Q&A with the film makers. Directed by Michael Chance >"Project Arbiter", 1943. Thousands of feet above Northern Europe a small plane carries a skeleton crew of the Allies best, including special operative captain Joseph Colburn. His handler, major Thomas Hardy does a final review of the mission's grim intel: infiltrate a mysterious villa on the Polish border and uncover its secrets. Colburn emerges donning a prototype suit, which can temporarily render its user invisible. As the plane's bay doors howl open Colburn begins to put on the skull-faced helmet when the plane is rocked by an anti-aircraft shell. Rapidly losing air pressure and altitude, now there's no question This is a one-way mission.
Directed by Gillian Shure >"Touched", a story about intimacy. When a newly blind man hires a prostitute, both are confronted with feeling their way through an unfamiliar and uncomfortable situation.
Directed by Traci Hays >"Lions Among Men", after masking her identity as a woman and joining the British Royal Navy in 1808, Victoria finds herself shipwrecked on an unknown island with the Lieutenant who betrayed her, the slave trader seeking to own her, and a West-African captive fighting to free them both. With her life at risk, Victoria must fight to overcome both her captors, and the binding mentality of the 19th Century culture wrought with enslavement and torture.
Directed by William J. Stribling >"Beyond Belief", though billed as a drama, contains elements of prophetic humor as it treats the life of a down and out magician. Along with his assistant, the protagonist endures the humiliation of living life as a wash out, but his skill of turning heartbreak into moments of playful wonder help turn the surprisingly intricate plot on its head. Even more surprising is the short's snappy dialogue and aesthetic quality.
Directed by Chris K.T. Bright >TSURU takes place mid-WWII in May 1942 a time of serious racial prejudice. As over 120,000 Japanese Americans are being evacuated and forcibly interned by the U.S. Government, an elderly Japanese couple, the Ikedas, are in hiding, residing in a neglected shack in the middle of a California canyon. Mariko, the wife, is doing her best to keep her ill husband Yoshio in good health. Their lifeline? A young American nurse. Giving them the supplies, food, and medicine needed to survive. As another wave of Japanese Americans are being evacuated, suspicions arise when FBI agents and military personnel are unable to find the Ikeda couple.
Directed by Matt McClung >"The Booth," a short film about a woman who dies, goes to Hell, and must complete the eternal punishment of dubbing a biblical epic in Spanish a surreal comedy about fixing your life in post-production.
