Folk for Farms
Folk for Farms is brought to you by Build It Up East TN, a non-profit dedicated to promoting local food and sustainable livelihoods in our region.  This year BIU launched an exciting program to support 10 families and a local high school to raise gardens in their backyard and sell extra produce to area farmers markets.  Tickets are $25 and all proceeds will go to support our 2015 Market Gardeners, our community garden in Erwin, and our two food forests in Johnson City!  Beyond just the feel good of supporting your local community, you also get to enjoy an awesome night of music and slam poetry!

Folk for Farms will feature some of Johnson City's finest musicians:

Amythyst Kiah is a Southern Roots/Alt-Country blues musician who has found a way to fuse traditional roots music with a contemporary style that makes for powerful original songs, and transforms traditional songs into powerful, soulful renditions. She draws heavily on Old Time music and is inspired by vocal stylings of R&B and Country music from the '50s-'70s. She also draws from contemporary popular artists that have similar powerful vocal integrity. Needless to say, Amythyst has got a lot of tools in her vocal tool box, and is also well on her way to joining the powerhouse vocalist pantheon.

The Continental Waylay, an eclectic little duo from the mountains of East Tennessee, was first conceived when Sarah Saunders and Jamie Dove met at the Alabama State Fair in 1983. Due to scheduling conflicts, two broken bones, and one notoriously unreliable Datsun, the pair didn't get around to starting the project until early 2012, the thinking being that it must be done before the end of the world later that year. So, one unseasonably warm February Friday, through the miracle that is text messaging, the duo got together in the 100 block of the East Trees and bonded musically over a Louvin Bros. tune, and have been getting together to waylay, exclusively on a continent, fairly regularly ever since.

Charis Carter's primary goal as a performer is to encourage peace, hope and understanding through the art of music and self expression. She is an all around Mary Poppins hand bag with no limits or boundaries to what she may be involved with next. Charis' wide range of performance art is expressed through politically charged writing children's educational tunes, freelance songwriting, lead vocalization for The Penny Dreadfuls and story telling.

Our uber talented Master of Ceremonies is none other than Kiran Sirah, President of the International Storytelling Center and Slam Poet extraordinaire!

A silent auction featuring an awesome combination of local art, donations from businesses, and plants will run from 6pm to 9:30pm.

A huge thanks to Ed Snodderly and the Down Home for the use of Johnson City's greatest music venue for our fundraiser!
