A Call To Compassionate Action
Seattle Center Exhibition Hall
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

Dear Compassionate Youth and Youth Organizations,

On Saturday, May 9, 2015 there will be a public program with His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. This program, "Karmapa in Seattle 2015: A Call to Compassionate Action," is part of His Holiness' 5-day visit to Seattle, May 5 - 10, 2015.

Who is the Karmapa?
His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje , is the head of the 900-year-old Karma Kagyu Lineage of Buddhism, and a guide to millions of Buddhists around the world. Encountering His Holiness Karmapa now is like hearing from HH the Dalai Lama 30 years ago, before the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

Whether featured in TIME Magazine , the Washington Post , or in his TED talk , the Karmapa is following in his mentor's footsteps, not as a political leader but as a unique spiritual voice actively advocating for the integration of a spiritual perspective into social justice issues.

In past eras we had figures like Gandhi and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who were able to bring civility, connection to the sacred in each other, and radical interdependence, into the most pressing issues of our time. Like his mentor, HH Dalai Lama, the Karmapa is poised to be an important world leader in this 21st century.

What is the purpose of your organization's Call to Action at the program?

The public program begins at 2:00 pm and will include a spontaneous interactive dialogue with 6 local youth speaking their minds about the things that matter to them in today's world.

At 4:00 pm youth holding their special tickets will convene in the same Hall for a youth designed and facilitated engagement that will be fun, real and relevant to the issues that youth are facing every day.  It will include interactive storytelling among peers, a small group exercise to select one priority issue and some strong recommendations on what youth can do to fix the issue if they had some help.  This engagement will end with readouts from each small group, a celebration and some entertainment.

Pizza and beverages will be available at 6:00 pm in the Seattle Center Court.  Bus tokens will be available for those youth who requested them at check in.

What is next?

Following this event, a team of youth planners and assistants will review the written reports and share the results with everyone who attended within one week by email.  Each attendee will be able to vote on the issue and action that they are willing to commit to planning and supporting in a specific way.  Adults will participate as assistants to resources and advice as requested and appropriate.

This initiative is being organized by the King County Youth Advisory Council, SOAR, Nalanda West and Compassionate Seattle.  Its focus is on King County and we welcome as partners all organizations who wish to support effective and authentic youth empowerment in our communities.
