Live from Brazil: Choro Das Tres
Choro das 3 is a Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father that first started to play as a band in 2003. Corina, 27, plays flute and piccolo. Lia, 25, plays 7-string guitar. Elisa, 22, plays mandolin, banjo, clarinet and piano. Their father, Eduardo, plays pandeiro (the Brazilian tambourine).

The music they play is called Choro. Choro is a form of urban jazz native to Brazil that shares a similar feel with New Orleans jazz or ragtime or bluegrass.

As little as ten years ago, Choro was mostly played by older musicians. It was in danger of dying out. Choro das 3 took a mission to keep Choro alive. They studied at the feet of the old masters, some of whom had played with the founders of Choro, such as Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim. Today Choro is played by musicians young and old, and is no longer in danger of going extinct.

In the last ten years, Choro das 3 has played Choro to many audiences, including some who had not heard Choro before. In 2005, Choro das 3 played for President Lula of Brazil, who praised the band's music. The band also received accolades after playing for José Serra and Geraldo Ackimin, officials of the State of Sao Paolo. In 2006 Choro das 3 played for more than 70,000 people at a Mass for Peace in Sao Paolo's Morumbi Stadium. Then they played for more than one million people at Reveillon, a public New Year's Eve Party in Sao Paulo.

In 2008, Som Livre, a major Brazilian record company, released the first Choro das 3 CD, entitled Meu Brasil Brasileiro. Music critic reactions included, "... one of the big surprises of Brazilian instrumental music," (Yahoo News), "interpretations of extreme creativity... a wonderful job of preservation and at the same time, renovation and modernization of Choro..." (Toninho Spessoto, Blog Acordes), and, "seductive . . . true-to- form . . . very Brazilian," (Tribuna da Imprensa), Choro das 3 frequently appears on popular television shows on such TV channels as Globo, Gazeta, SBT, Rede Vida, Multishow and Globo News. Through these shows their work has reached people all across Brazil.

In 2011, Choro das 3 was invited to France, to the Festival Internacional de Mandolines de Lunel. Choro das 3's main concert took place in the full house of 600 seats. After the concert, festival producer Olivier Chabrol said, "Tonight we heard the real Brazil." In 2012, Choro das 3 released their second CD, Escorregando (Sliding) on their own record label, "Macole." Music critics responded, "Choro das 3 . . . represents the newest and most talented music in the Brazilian landscape. . . " (Bom dia, Nov/08/12), and, "a real gift for instrumental music fans . . . a happy, eclectic and innovative album." (Jornal Ipanema, Nov/22/12). There were concerts for Escorregando's release in São Paulo (SP), Sorocaba (SP) and João Pessoa (PB), with full coverage by TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. Again the critics raved, ". . . interactive and lively," (Bom dia, Nov/08/12), ". . . grace, talent and serious Choro research," (PBAgora, Nov/26/12).

In 2013 Choro das 3 did a big tour of the USA. They played more than 30 concerts in 20 different American states, traveling some 20,000 km. The tour coincided with the release of their new album entitled Boas Novas (Good News in English). They were invited to Mike Marshall and David Grisman's Mandolin Symposium, where they performed a concert and taught classes of Brazilian Choro. Mike Marshall said that Choro das 3 played, "the highest quality of Brazilian Choro music that can be heard any place today." In the Mandolin Symposium's grand finale concert Elisa Meyer was awarded the concert master's chair.

Choro das 3 is in great demand for concerts and festivals in Brazil. They returned to America in 2014 and will perform at the Old Church as part of their 3-month 2015 tour.
