Call and Response
Call and Response is a new contemporary music series that explores the process of writing and performing music. Emerging composers will have a piece premiered and engage in conversation with the musicians performing the work, as well as the audience, about the composition's conception, execution, and how it may evolve. By taking conversations about performance practice, notational systems, interpretation and creativity out of the practice room and putting them on stage, audiences can pick the brains of composers and performers and gain new insight into the creative process.

This month's Call and Response composer is Jesse Greenberg,a Queens-based composer, percussionist, pianist and educator, interested in the relationships between rhythm, notation, and improvisation. He is the mallet percussionist and composer-in-residence for ShoutHouse, and has recently composed for Mahagonny Ensemble, Todd Crow, Eric Lamb, and Moran Katz, receiving the Jean Slater Edson Prize for his wind trio, Phantasmagoria (2013). Jesse performs percussion for the reggae-soul group, Little Shaman, and for various improvisational recording projects.

Known as a dynamic player with a large sound and a deep expressive tone, New York City native Eric Cooper began teaching himself cello at the age of 12. Studying on his own gave him a deep connection with the cello. He cofounded The Brandy Trio, which explores the mostly unknown string trio repertoire as well and commissioning new works for sting to or mixed ensemble. Additional Mr. Cooper is currently a member of The Brandy Chamber Music Society, principle cellist in One World Symphony and The String Orchestra of Brooklyn, The West Village String Quartet, Ensemble Du Monde, and as well as assistant principle cellist in The Colour of Music Festival Orchestra.

Former cellist of the Aiana String Quartet, Jillian Bloom, is a dynamic and passionate New York based artist. She has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician across the US and abroad, winning the Coleman-Barstow prize at the Coleman International Chamber Music Competition in 2010, First Prize in the University of Texas Concerto Competition in 2012, and premiering Thomas Sleeper's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium, in 2008.

In 2014 she founded the performance series 'For the Love of Every Note' which delves into the experimental world of multi-genre performance as well as focuses on bringing to light possibilities for the development of musical expression within the traditional art form of chamber music. Jillian is an avid proponent of classical, contemporary, experimental, free and improvised music and looks forward to future collaborations with like-minded artists.

Aaron Ewing is a Brooklyn based drummer, percussionist, and composer. He has been playing for almost 20 years, and teaching for the past 13. He holds an M.A. in Jazz Performance from New York University, where he was mentored by Grammy award-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez. Aaron has performed at many prestigious venues throughout New York, including Lincoln Center, Citi Field, and the Blue Note. He has performed with jazz artists Lenny Pickett, Joe Lovano, Brian Lynch, Kenny Werner, Ralph Alessi, George Garzone, Jean-Michel Pilc, and many others. He has appeared on a number on recordings, including a critically-acclaimed album by jazz trio Reed's Bass Drum, which received positive reviews from TimeOut New York, Jazz Times, and Jazz Inside Magazine. He currently performs and composes for ShoutHouse, a NYC based orchestral hip-hop collective.
