Lisa Engelken Quartet
"She is an utter original. Blessed with superlative power, control and range. Engelken can, as mood requires, be as soft as dew or as intense as a sleet storm; her interpretive instincts are astounding."
- Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
LISA ENGELKEN is a vervy and fearless vocalist with a daunting stage presence. Classically and theatrically trained, this Kansas-born straight shooter wields an acrobatic three-octave range and alternately locomotes and floats through tunes. Lisa electrifies audiences with an intensity that has garnered her comparisons to Evel Kneivel, Janis Joplin & even a roaring Harley Davidson.
Now living in San Francisco, Lisa is excited to return to Kansas City after her last raucous, sold-out performances there. She will again join forces with a powerhouse trio that combines Kansas City's finest-- pianist Roger Wilder and bassist Gerald Spaits, with San Francisco (by way of the U.K.) drummer Matthew Swindells.
Together the Quartet will celebrate their live debut of her most recent release Little Warrior : a vibrant collection of originals & re-imaginings of The Cars, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln, Chick Corea, and Wayne Shorter. The poly-glot Engelken also includes "Viva la felicità," a joyous samba adapted from the 70's Italian children's cartoon "Signor Rossi." Lisa produced and arranged the eleven tracks on Little Warrior, named to the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2013 and to the "Best of 2013" by the Jazz Journalists Association.
Little Warrior was released in follow-up to Caravan (also arranged & produced by Lisa), an album that propelled Engelken onto the national jazz scene, named among the "Best of 2010" by the Jazz Journalists Association and to several prominent jazz critics' Top 10 Lists. Caravan features Lisa's fresh takes on Brazilian, swing and contemporary works by Freddie Hubbard, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Joni Mitchell and Billy Idol.
Lisa has shared the stage with Tom Waits, John Cameron Mitchell, T-Bone Burnett and Yo la tengo, and was awarded the SF Drama Critics Award for her portrayal as Yitzhak in the rock musical Hedwig & the Angry Inch.
