Salcedo Sisters in Concert!
Salcedo Sisters: In Concert and Conversation A benefit performance for Ukiah Symphony Association by Karen Rifkin
The Salcedo Sistersvocalist, violinist and music instructor Margie Salcedo Rice, 30-year concert mistress of the Ukiah Symphony; pianist Rosie Salcedo Concepcion of Menlo Park; and flutist Patricia Salcedo Williams of Calistoga--will be performing Broadway show tunes and classic love songs as a benefit concert for the Ukiah Symphony Association on Sunday, May 3rd at 3 pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Their Ecuadorian parents instilled in the three gifted sisters a deep love of music and when they reached the first grade, they were each provided with private lessons in piano, voice, violin or flute. In college they graduated from Loma Linda University with majors in business and minors in music. "Growing up we had classical music playing in the background all the timeVan Cliburn, Jascha Heifetz, Leontyne Pricebut my father had little formal training and my mother, to this day, cannot carry a tune," says Rice.
Concepcion, primarily a pianist, is a composer and considers music an avocation; she plays in church and accompanies her two daughters who play viola and cello. Williams played flute in the local Loma Linda Orchestra and was principal flutist for the Loma Linda Church Orchestra.
The young sisters began playing for church and friends and segued into chamber music sonatas on violin, piano and flute in concerto programs in the Loma Linda University music department.
Playing informally in the 70s and 80s, they began performing more regularly and cut their first album in 1997, "By My Side," Christian contemporary music, produced locally by Spencer Brewer, with original compositions by Rice and Concepcion as well as arrangements by other artists.
Their second album, "Carry Me On," came out in 1999 and is a mix of originals and traditionals produced by Tom Keene of Los Angeles; in 2010 Rice produced a solo album, "In Your Holiness," in Nashville. Speaking of the upcoming event, Rice says, "We invite you into our living room and will share stories of our childhood and songs we grew up singing around the pianoBroadway show tunes, classic love songs and original music.
"Music is our avocation, our love, our language. When we get together it's as if no time has lapsed. We feel the music together, express it together and love playing it together."
The repertoire of show tunes will include "Some Enchanted Evening" (South Pacific); "Getting to Know You" (The King and I); and "Out of My Dreams" (Oklahoma) all by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II; and "I Could Have Danced All Night" (My Fair Lady) by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.
Other numbers will include "Tenderly" by Walter Gross and Jack Lawrence; "Nice Work If You Can Get It" by George and Ira Gershwin; and "The Girl From Ipanema" by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes and English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. Rounding out the performance will be original music; and all numbers will be performed with Rice on vocals accompanied by Concepcion on piano and Williams on flute.
"Our goal for this show is to raise funds to keep the symphony viable for years to come; it's such an important and valuable resource for our community," says Rice. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for 18 and under or ASB card and will be on sale at Mendocino Book Company, www.brownpapertickets.com starting April 4, or at the door at the Holy Episcopal Trinity Church at 640 South Orchard Street.
