Earth Day Mobile Bay Silent Movie Fundraiser - "The Wind" (1928) w/ live soundtrack by The Invincible Czars
Special One Night Performance!
Austin's Invincible Czars play a special show performing their soundtrack to "The Wind" live with the movie at Faulkner State College's Centennial Hall in Fairhope. Proceeds from the performance will benefit Earth Day Mobile Bay.
Tickets are available on a sliding "Pay-What-You-Can" scale. (We suggest $10 for adults and $5 for kids).
Shot in 1928 and set in late 1800s West Texas, The Wind is more psychological thriller than wester. It tells the story of Letty Mason, young woman who moves to the plains of Texas from Virginia and is driven mad by the unrelenting wind and culture shock of the West. Unlike many silent films The Wind has the kind of great acting, attention to detail and cinematography that modern audiences are accustomed to.
Even more surprising for the time, the film is carried by its female lead character and the acting of Lillian Gish!
The Wind is based on the novel of the same name by Dorothy Scarborough. The book, originally published anonymously, created an uproar in West Texas where community leaders resented the bleak depiction of their region and insisted the author must never have visited the area.
The Invincible Czars score is minimal and quite a departure for anyone that's ever seen the band. The live soundtrack features flute, bass clarinet, violin, voices, acoustic guitar, electric bass and a banker's box full of percussion instruments all performed by just four musicians. In typical Czars fashion, adapted classical music appears in the score. This time, it's the second movement of Beethoven's "Symphony No. 7" given a spaghetti western treatment.
