1095 Skagit Community Meeting
Purpose of this meeting: How can the bounty from the summer and fall harvest be available for meals later in the year? Presentations will explore the "Fifth Season" from both the institutional and home perspective with an opportunity for questions & answers and sharing among participants.

Meeting Agenda

Welcome and Introductions  what is your role/work in Food Access/Food System. What do you hope to learn from today's meeting?

The Fifth Season. The term "Fifth Season" is used to describe adding another season to the four seasons by preserving the harvest when it is most bountiful and consuming later in the year. Both institutions and home food preservation can contribute to improve the Food Access for our community and families.

Presenters:

Madie Murray, Farm to Cafeteria, Orcas Island.  "Over the past 8 years Madie Murray has worked to invigorate the Farm to Cafeteria program on Orcas Island. Each summer, Madie leads the "fifth season" activities, bringing together a team of dedicated farm to cafeteria volunteers to slice, dice, peel, process and freeze the bounty of fresh produce, fruits and herbs received from several Orcas Island Farms so they may be used in school lunches during the coming school year.

Vivian Smallwood  WSU Food Preservation and Safety Advisor. Vivian Smallwood's food preservation skills are legendary. She has been canning and teaching about safe home food preservation for over 50 years and provides answers to home canning questions to ensure best practice and safe food. She will share information on different home food processing techniques, cost considerations, storage and references for successful home food preservation.
