"Whatever I Like" at The Secret Garden
A qanun recital by Sarah Michael, with Peter Maund, percussion and Suellen Primost, cello. A selection of Arabic, Turkish, Armenian and other pieces played on the qanun, the Middle Eastern zither. From lively dance tunes to modal improvisations, Cuban standards to Medieval saltarellos, Sarah will play her current favorite tunes, accompanied by the astonishing drumming of Peter Maund and the elegant and inventive cello of Suellen Primost.

Sarah Michael, Qanun
Qanun player Sarah Michael received her Bachelor of Music degree in music history from San Francisco State University in 1976, and her M.A. in Composition from Mills College in Oakland, California in 1994. She performed extensively on the viola da gamba, and composed many chamber works and several orchestral pieces which received local performances. For the last fifteen years, she has been playing and studying Middle Eastern music, primarily with the great composer and accordion virtuoso, Elias Lammam. She has performed with groups including Aswat, Flowers of the Nile, Elias Lammam Ensemble, the Mevlevi Mutrib, El Alzifoon, and her own quartet, Zamanna.
Peter Maund, Percussion
Peter Maund, a native of San Francisco, studied percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and music, folklore and ethnomusicology at UC, Berkeley. A founding member of Ensemble Alcatraz and Alasdair Fraser's Skyedance, he has performed with early and contemporary music ensembles including Alboka, Anonymous 4, Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players, Chanticleer, Davka, El Mundo, The Harp Consort, Hesperion XX, Kitka, Los Cenzontles, Musica Pacifica, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Voices of Music. Presenters and venues include Cal Performances, Carnegie Hall, Celtic Connections (Glasgow), Festival Pau Casals, Cervantino Festival (Guanajuato), Confederation House (Jerusalem), Edinburgh Festival, Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Folkfestival Dranouter, Horizante Orient Okzident (Berlin), The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Palacio Congresos (Madrid), Queen Elizabeth Hall (London) and Tage Alter Musik (Regensburg). Peter's percussion can be heard on over 50 recordings.
Suellen Primost, Cello
Suellen Primost is a seasoned cellist, recording artist and sound healer, highly sought after for her expressive playing and musical versatility. From Classical, Celtic, Eastern European, Middle Eastern to New Age, Ambient, Jazz and Contemporary Music, Suellen provides "stunning soundscapes that stir the imagination and enliven the soul. " Currently, Suellen performs with Neshamah-Divine Breath, Divine Soul (with Evelie Delfino SÃ¥les Posch), Spiral Dance Chamber Jazz, The Espiritu Ensembles, Soul Tones, also with Sarah Michael (qanun) and Mary Ellen Donald (dumbek).
