The Illusion of Injury Unarmed Workshop
Class Description:

Hey actors! Here's your chance to learn how to punch, slap, and break someone's neck. Well, not really! It's all an illusion. As actors, we are sometimes called upon to simulate violence on stage. When this happens, it is thrilling for the audience when the illusion looks real and very important for the actors that it is done in a safe and controlled way. In this two day workshop, you will learn the principals of partnering and the basic techniques involved in creating staged violence. The instructor, Emily Carvey, is a member of The Society of American Fight Directors and has over 13 years experience in stage combat. The course will focus on commonly requested injuries such as slaps, strangles, neck-breaks, punches, plus a few more. This class is open to actors 18 years and over and to High School Seniors and Juniors with written permission from a parent or guardian. Space is limited so sign up today!

About the Instructor:

Emily Carvey has been doing stage combat as a member of The Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) since 2002. She graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2004 with a BA in Theatre with Honors where she specialized in stage combat. At Columbia College she studied under Fight Director with the SAFD John McFarland and Fight Master with the SAFD David Woolley. She also worked as an assistant to Mr. McFarland and Mr. Woolley for three semesters. She has certified in all weapons with the SAFD and earned a recommended pass in unarmed and knife. Upon Graduation, she was cast as Maid Marion in the fight-cast of the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Since then she has continued her training by attending the SAFD's Winter Wonderland Workshop in Chicago three times. She has performed as an actor combatant in many productions including Tarantino Tales at The Hollywood Fight Club and the short film A Dark Corner Turned. She has worked as a fight choreographer in productions such as The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Bristol Renaissance Faire, and most recently Albuquerque Little Theatre's production of Les Miserables.
