TriBeCaStan Live! A Night of Genre-Bending Jazz & World-Music
Nestled in the heart of New York's bustling urban sprawl lies a sonic oasis in which the sounds of the Middle East meet surf rock, Erik Satie melds with tango beats, and traditional Balkan melodies mingle with the adventurism of east coast loft jazz. Here, Swedish nykelharpas and Pakistani taxi horns co exist in harmony (or mayhem) alongside thoroughbred jazz brass, driving grooves, exotic strings, and buzzing reeds. Welcome to the global brew of TriBeCaStan.

Tearing down boundaries between global and American music, the unique all-instrumental band is an ever-evolving collective based around core multi-instrumentalists and founders John Kruth and Jeff Greene and an exuberant collaboration among some of New York's finest jazz and world musicians, who have worked and recorded with such legendary innovators as Ornette Coleman, Patti Smith, Aretha Franklin, John McLaughlin, James Brown, Mink DeVille, Santana, Sting, and Taj Mahal.

TriBeCaStan was founded during a particularly raucous celebration of World Jug Band Day, when washboards and tubs turned into musical parades on the streets of NYC's TriBeCa. "We knew we had to keep on doing this," says John Kruth. Known for his "banshee mandolin" playing with bands like the Meat Puppets and the Violent Femmes, Kruth united with ethnomusicological whiz and global instrument collector Jeff Greeneand founded a new musical nation.

Never attempting to recreate the music of its myriad sources, TriBeCaStan draws upon ethnic influences but also upon the players' backgrounds in American genresfolk, rock, blues, funk, and the uniquely native idiom of jazz. Full of subtle references to jazz greats, psychedelia, film scores, '60s TV music, and vintage Americana, the band's music is like the soundtrack to some surreal travelogue. When you hitch a ride on TriBeCaStan's magic carpet, you never know where you're going to land.
