Missouri Women's Chorus presents So Many Angels! Works of Gwyneth Walker for Women's Chorus on Mother's Day, May 10, 2015
Internationally acclaimed composer Dr. Gwyneth Walker to visit St. Louis, Missouri World Premiere of Dr. Gwyneth Walker's song cycle "Gospel Songs for Women's Chorus and String Quartet"
ST. LOUIS, MO, APRIL 6, 2015 - On Sunday, May 10, 2015 the Missouri Women's Chorus, under the direction of Scott Schoonover, will present So Many Angels! The Works of Gwyneth Walker for Women's Chorus. The concert honors the work of Dr. Gwyneth Walker, internationally acclaimed composer of music and features the world premiere of her song cycle "Gospel Songs for Women's Chorus and String Quartet." Dr. Walker will host the concert, introducing the pieces as they are presented, and be the guest of honor at a public reception following the concert.
Selections will include the song cycles "Mother Earth: Songs of a Strong Woman," "Spirit of Women: Three Songs based on American Spirituals," and "Gospel Songs for Women's Chorus and String Quartet" featuring mezzo-soprano Rose Fischer. Additional works include "The Lord's Prayer," "Let Evening Come," "Gifts from the Sea," and more.
The Missouri Women's Chorus, under the direction of Scott Schoonover, will be accompanied by Cathy Benton on piano, Wanda Becker and Manuela Kaymakanova on violin, Victoria Brannan on viola, and Tracy Andreotti on cello.
So Many Angels! will be presented at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Union Avenue Christian Church at 733 N. About the Missouri Women's Chorus: Founded in December 2010, the Missouri Women's Chorus has as its mission "to achieve excellence in the performance of a repertoire of quality music written or arranged for women's voices." Gwyneth Walker's music is widely performed throughout the country, and the music of the American composer is beloved by performers and audiences alike for its energy, beauty, reverence, drama, and humor. Dr. Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947) is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M., and D.M.A. degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. For nearly 30 years, she lived on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont. She now divides her time between her childhood hometown of New Canaan, Connecticut and the musical communities of Sarasota, Florida and Randolph, Vermont. Walker's catalog includes over 300 commissioned works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, and solo voice. A special interest has been dramatic works that combine music with readings, acting, and movement. The music of Gwyneth Walker is published by E.C. Schirmer (choral/vocal music) and Lauren Keiser Music (orchestral/instrumental music).
Scott Schoonover is founder and Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Union Avenue Opera. At UAO he has served as conductor of more than fifty productions over the past twenty years and will conduct Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, and Götterdämmerung during the company's 2015 Festival Season. Schoonover has also conducted for several other regional companies including Asheville Lyric Opera in Asheville, NC, Muddy River Opera Company, in Quincy, Illinois, and Winter Opera Saint Louis. Also active as a choral conductor, Schoonover is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Missouri Women's Chorus since its inception in 2010, and has acted as a guest conductor and clinician for many choruses in the St. Louis area. He serves as Director of Music at Union Avenue Christian Church where he has led the Chancel Choir on two European concerts tours to Italy and German/Austria and this coming June to London/Ireland.
