About the Honorees
Closing the Gap in the Rockaways Founded in 1999, Ocean Bay Community Development Corporation's (OBCDC) mission is to assist in the revitalization of the Rockaway Peninsula. During the past 15 years, OBCDC has worked tirelessly to close the gap created by seemingly intractable disparities and inter-generational poverty. Since its inception, OBCDC has served thousands of NYCHA and non-NYCHA Rockaways residents and families. OBCDC listens to expressed needs of the community and supplies them with relevant services including targeted outreach; walk-in services; weekly information sessions and client assessment/enrollment; workforce development and job placement services; financial counseling; case management, and youth leadership development. All these sustainable programs are buttressed by the commitment and participation of OBCDC's Board of Directors, staff, funders, and partners with direct input of community leaders and residents.
Governed by a dedicated board of community stakeholders, OBCDC is led by Founding Executive Director, Patricia Simon, a visionary leader under whose guidance OBCDC has grown in several dimensions. With the creation of a new strategic plan, the shepherding of strong partnerships with governmental, funding and non-profit leaders, Ms. Simon has helped OBCDC successfully remain on track, achieving and exceeding its mission and goals.
Empowering Residents Brad Lander is a NYC Council Member representing Brooklyn's 39th District. Named one of "Today's Social Justice Heroes" by The Nation magazine, Brad is a leader on issues of affordable housing, livable communities, the environment, and public education. As a founding member and past co-chair of the Council's Progressive Caucus, he has fought successfully to hold banks accountable to communities, reform discriminatory practices in the NYPD, protect NYC manufacturing jobs, and stop tax breaks for millionaires and funding cuts to schools, firehouses, parks, libraries, and day care centers.
Brad believes that the best way to govern is to empower residents to make key decisions about the future of their community, including convening public visioning sessions to plan renovations of neighborhood parks and partnering with residents to develop solutions to local problems. Prior to joining the City Council in 2009, Brad directed the Pratt Center for Community Development and before that, the Fifth Avenue Committee. He is a founding board member of Local Progress, a national network of progressive municipal elected officials, and is on the boards of Democratic Municipal Officials and Smart Growth America's Local Leaders Council. His work has been recognized with awards from the Ford Foundation, Fannie Mae Foundation, Do Something, American Planning Association, Streetsblog, and New York Magazine.
