Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods & the Terroir of the Gorge
With a view of the Columbia River Gorge as a backdrop from the Riverview Room at the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn, the dynamic Professor Scott Burns will present his popular lecture and PowerPoint presentation "Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods."

His talk will focus on the incredible story of J. Harlen Bretz's discovery and interpretation of the geological evidence throughout the Pacific Northwest that finally led to the now commonly accepted account of the Missoula Floods.  One of the greatest sets of geological events ever to occur in North America, this series of cataclysmic floods repeatedly inundated more than 16,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest with unbelievable power, reaching heights of up to 400 feet and permanently altering the landscape.  The effects of the floods were particularly dramatic throughout the National Scenic Area of the Columbia River Gorge with tributaries of the Columbia left hanging, creating waterfalls for which the area is well known.

Dr. Scott Burns is a sixth generation Oregonian, a recently retired Professor of Geology and past Chair of the Department of Geology at Portland State University, where he just finished his 22nd year of teaching. Scott has B.S. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University, plus a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is known for his fascinating and humorous presentations and has led many a terroir tour throughout Oregon. Scott has been teaching for 42 years and specializes in environmental and engineering geology, geomorphology, soils, and Quaternary geology. In Oregon, his projects include those involving landslides and land use, earthquake hazard mapping, paleosols, loess soil stratigraphy and the Missoula Floods. He is a prolific writer and has authored more than 90 publications, including the recent rewriting of the book "Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods."

PROFESSOR BURNS IS THE TOUR GUIDE FOR THE WINES NORTHWEST ALL-DAY "GEOLOGICAL WINE TOUR OF THE COLUMBIA GORGE WINE REGION" DEPARTING FROM THE HOTEL THE FOLLOWING MORNING.
