When You're Smiling
When You're Smiling is based on playwright Steve Pavelsky's parents' 50th wedding anniversary & is full of laughter, sweet moments, & sadness. Bring plenty of tissues!

Directed by Jim Singleton

About the Playwright:

Steven Pavelsky was born in the borough of the Bronx, New York, on February 8th, 1952 where he spent his first living years.

His mother, Dorothy, contracted tuberculoses when he was two years old and had to be quarantined in a sanatorium upstate. His older sister (Analee) and he were left in the loving care of their father, Jacob.

"Pop" was truck driver who made his living hauling goods and products all over the continental United States. He had no choice but to find someone in the family to take the kids in, so he could make a living. Steve's mother's sister, Fay, was the only one willing to take in a teenage girl AND a two year old. She and her Husband, Harry, lived in the suburban neighborhood of Hialeah, outside the city of Miami. So, at the age of two, the Pavelsky children  moved to Florida.

At the age of eight, Steve entered a writing contest at elementary school. The winner would have their short story read, over the public address system, to the entire school. He didn't win, but really liked the process of writing, found he had a great imagination and some basic talent so he pursued it, spending most of his time dreaming of someday becoming a professional writer. His ninth grade classes were a blur. He flunked algebra, spending all of his class time writing poetry.

At age fifteen, Steve wrote the first of his plays, The Baba Will Get You, a surrealistic comedy in two acts. It wasn't performed until ten years later when he & his wife moved to North Carolina.

At some point in time, Steve became involved with Community Theater. Theater became a major influence, and remains a big part of his life. He also joined a local writing group, which was a great source for critiques and other helpful input.

Pavelsky's father died in his arms, immediately following his fiftieth wedding anniversary party. The shock prompted him to write the second of his plays, 'When Your Smiling' as a catharsis He was writing again.

In 1990, he discovered the Internet, was astounded by the possibilities. At the time, though, computers were slow and tedious; he grew disillusioned & stopped web surfing until a few years later. With the advent of faster computers and modems, he picked it back up. It wasn't long before he found a poetry bulletin board, earned the nickname 'Sparrky' because of a particularly romantic poem he posted. In 1993 Sparrky penned his play about romance on the Internet, The romantic comedy 'Writer's Café,' which was presented at Nash Arts in 2009 under the direction of Jim Lowdermilk.

Steve currently resides in Leggett, NC with his wife, Helen and our their two dogs Eli and Callie.
