The Yellow Boat Project: Boats, Bags and Books
Dear Friend,
Children deserve the chance to attend school, obtain knowledge, and utilize learning resources to hopefully further their education. By doing so, ladders of opportunity are created; opportunities for growth, development, and enhanced social skills, not just for themselves, but for their families and for their community. Although there are no guarantees, each child should have this chance.
At Yellow Boat of Hope we believe that children are the moving force of the future and education is an integral part of every child's success. In the Philippines, the current reality is that rural children have an average of 4 years LESS education than urban children due to poverty and physical access to schools. By providing access to education to children from disadvantaged communities in remote and impoverished areas, a ripple effect is created towards opening the gaps of opportunity to succeed.
Yellow Boat of Hope helps in this endeavor by making boats, dorms, bridges, and schools available to these communities in need.
Since 2010, the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation has provided 2386 boats to over 45 communities. The small yellow boats are used for schools, coastal hospitals for medical and dental missions, and for livelihood to fish and transport goods and supplies. The larger boats are outfitted with an engine and used primarily as a school bus which can transport 15-20 school children. These boats currently serve as a means of transportation for over 10,000 people.
Yellow Boat of Hope has built four schools that accommodate over 100 students.Due to the remoteness of some villages, a dormitory has been built at one school to house 40 students who reside there during the school week and then travel home for the weekends. In addition, 7 daycare centers/libraries have also been built to accommodate the children.
Yellow Boat of Hope created the Adopt a Fisherman Project which provides boats to fishermen severely affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) so that they are able to continue their livelihood and provide for their families and communities.
On April 18th 2015, Yellow Boat of Hope, together with Bag943 (Be A Giver) and Green Mango Books will be having its first fundraising and awareness event in Los Angeles. We hope you will support us and grow with us as we help these underprivileged communities get proper education and assistance to empower them in their future endeavors. We look forward to hearing and seeing you! You can also visit us at www.yellowboat.org and facebook stories
