Kalapriya Presents 'India's Daughter': An Evening of Documentary, Dialogue, and Dance
India's Daughter, a documentary film directed by Leslee Udwin as part of the BBC's ongoing Storyville Series, banned by the Indian Government for release in India, brings to light the endemic rape culture in the country. The film has generated a great deal of controversy in India and worldwide. The film has gone viral on social media and premiered on March 9, 2015 in the US.

The documentary pays tribute to the remarkable and inspiring short life of Jyoti Singh and documents the brutality of her gang rape and murder in Delhi in 2012. It also examines the mindset of the perpetrators, and it sets these specifics against a wider in-depth exploration of why rape happens, including voices of the victim's parents and friends.

Kalapriya Center for Indian Performing Arts presents 'India's Daughter': An Evening of Documentary, Dialogue, and Dance - a platform where artists, thinkers, professionals, and the community comes together in Chicago to spread awareness about the issue, mobilize public opinion, discuss plausible solutions, and pay homage to the victim. Join us in this endeavor to be the change.

The documentary film will be shown in conjunction with a panel discussion moderated by Niala Boodhoo, Host on WBEZ, Chicago Public Media. The panelists include Neha Gill, Executive Director, Apna Ghar Lubia Nuñez-Montelongo, Community Educator - Sexual Assault Program, Mujeres Latinas en Acción, and Diana Newton, Executive Director, Porchlight Counseling Services. Kalapriya Dance Company will present dance works specially curated and performed by Priya Narayan and Komal Shah.

Doors open at 6 pm. Join us for light refreshments and a meet and greet before the event. See you there!
