Drawing from the Collections: Artistry, Exploration, and Enrichment
Each session 9 a.m.-noon.

Each session sold separately.

Artist, Architectural Illustrator, and Author Richard E. Scott will conduct six-sessions, drawing on the art, architecture, and gardens of the Huntington. Students will learn how to draw to improve visual perception, and enrich their visual experience. Students may choose to enroll in individual classes, or attend all six classes. Anyone interested in art, from beginners, to seasoned plein air painters, can benefit from these classes.

May 7--A Simpler Way to Learn Accurate Drawing
The first session will begin with a series of exercises designed to sharpen how the student sees a subject matter so that it may be more accurately drawn. The drawing method will then be applied to draw various artworks in the art galleries.

May 14--Expressive Lines
In the second session, attention will shift to the character of lines, so that each line is expressive of the form and material being drawn. Students will apply the lessons to draw the sculptures, fountain, and plant materials in the North Vista Lawn.

May 21--Creating the Illusion of Light and Form
In the third session, tonal values (how the illusion of light and form is produced in an artwork) will be explored. Students will apply the lessons to draw various parts of the gardens.

June 11--Perspective Demystified
In the fourth session, linear perspective will be demystified through discussion, examples, and demonstration. Students will apply the lessons to draw the architecture of the Huntington.

June 18--Advanced Perspective
In the fifth session, more complex ideas on perspective will be discussed and demonstrated. Students will apply the lessons to draw the Pavilion of the Three Friends.

June 25--Composition: The Big Idea
In the final session, design and composition will be studied. Students will learn the art of the "thumbnail" sketch as a fun and effective way to understand and plan compositions. Students will apply lessons to draw subjects from the art collection and gardens.
