This two hour guided tour includes access to the Towers Building, an adjacent wing undergoing construction, a wing still in disrepair, and additional spaces in these buildings not available on the Welcome Tour.
Discover the past, present, and future of the Richardson Olmsted Complex and experience the interior spaces of the purpose-built structures and healing landscape that created a therapeutic environment then considered the most progressive treatment available for mental illness. The In Depth Tour further examines the philosophies that architect Henry Hobson Richardson, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Kirkbride integrated into the 140-year-old former state hospital facility.
See firsthand the transformation as the Complex is adaptively reused as a hospitality venue and cultural amenity for the city, beginning with Hotel Henry in 1/3 of the buildings. Alongside and intertwined with the hotel and conference center will be the Buffalo Architecture Center.
