Dr. SYNTHIA  SAINT JAMES  is an internationally acclaimed artist/author/speaker, Many of you may know her as the designer of Kwanzaa US Postal Stamp, or as the artist behind the  hard copy book cover for "Waiting to Exhale,"  or as the artist and  Ambassador for the Susan G. Komen Foundation's Race for the Cure; or as the person whose art has been seen in movies and on television, in embassies around the world, etc.  What you may not know about  her is how she consistently contributes to a deeper understanding of African-American culture through her works, and how she gives back to the community in her service. You may not know that she has been commissioned to do inaugural paintings to hang on the wall of college presidents.  You may not know that she is an amazing business woman.  You may not know that she and fellow artist Charles Bibbs have collaborated with each other on several paintings.  You may not know that she loves to laugh and smile.  Join us early to meet her. MANUELITA BROWN is a renowned and amazingly talented Sculptor who recently unveiled her sculpture of Sojourner Truth at UC San Diego's Marshall School which is now its home. What you may not know is that Manuelita was a math teacher for many years prior to entering the world of sculpting in 2009. You may not know of her amazing talent to unravel the fear that many students bring into the math classroom.  You may not know how she connects her background in math to her work as a sculptor. You may not know that she has done numerous commissioned sculptures and is an advocate for sculptures as a way of commemorating history.  You may not know that she is the mother of Vincent Brown,acclaimed historian and PBS documentary film producer with the most recent film being "American Denial,"  and before that "The Story of the Negro" with Dr. Henry Gates at Harvard.     You may not know why she does the work that she does, and the importance of bronze sculptures to our images of our communities and people for future generations. DR. MINNIE DOUGLAS, is an amazing community advocate, community organizer, community leader.  One cannot say her name without using the word "community,"  Where ever something is occurring you will usually find her footprint, if not in person then in support and advocacy.  She serves on numerous community-focused committees and boards. She  serves and she advocates for the inclusion of other African-Americans. What you may not know is that she was the first African-American  Director, Nursing Programs at Long Beach City College. You may not know that she has mentored countless persons in community service strategies. You may not know that she has mentored many others interested in nursing as a career. Dr. DIEDRE WALTON is a multi-talented person who has gained knowledge from a variety of perspectives. She is an attorney, a retired military officer, an ordained elder in the A. M. E.  Church,  a registered nurse, a parent, and the President of one of the nation's premier Nursing Organizations i.e. National Black Nurses Association.  She has always found a way to connect with communities while at the same time standing in the gap by advising issues of health policy that impact on the lives of Black nurses and populations.  What you may not know is how she does this.   You may not know what challenges she faced and how she turned those challenges into opportunities.  You may not know that she is an advocate for leadership opportunities for Black Nurses. MARCUS TYSON, is an amazing talented young man who takes the phrase "life-long learner" and "self-taught" to a new level. He has distinguished himself by his ability to carefully craft his own curriculum for learning the intricacies of the fields of wealth management, property management,  philanthropy; mentoring and community empowerment, etc .  He learns from the persons who have the lived experiences and proven success in those arenas. He creates a village to surround him and in turn he surrounds others.  What you may not know is that he serves on community boards. You may not know  that  he is a sought after source of advice to those persons seeking to empower themselves and various underserved communities.  You may not know that he provides care to his own elderly relatives and is a source of encouragement, respect, and caring for many others. You may not know that he mentors numerous young men in life strategies.  You may not know that  he is a devoted member of his church. Find out the importance of persons such as Marcus to your community. We invite you to meet him!

Dr. ANNA MCDONALD, mother of six-time Tony Award-winning singer/actress Audra McDonald, brings a wealth of life experiences and a deep understanding of the importance of having a Village of support and love as a natural way of being in a community.  She has exemplified that in every organization in which she has worked and lived, always "lifting as she climbed,"  and always making a positive difference.  What you may not know is that she grew up in a small  segregated town. You may not know is that her father was a college dean. You might not know that she is a mother and a grandmother. You might not know she is a retired senior University Administrator. You may not know that tennis is her passion and she has traveled the world tennis circuit.  She can tell you so much more. We want you to meet her and learn from her strategies.


JACOB FOKO, founder of Global Humanitarian Photojournalists, is a talented photojournalist and documentary film maker  who has not only produced documentaries that address social issues, but who has also created environments in which others can learn how to do this and can stand at the center of their own narratives. What you may not know is that Jacob is a Prince of the Baleng in the West Region of Cameroon, Africa.  You may not know that he works tirelessly to "Document and spread awareness of worldwide poverty and human rights abuses, as well as to present the stories of people and organizations..."  You may not know that he always "lifts others as he climbs" through shared accolades for work accomplished and other ways.  We invite you to meet him, and those he applauds for being there for him all along the journey.  [see a sample of his earlier work:  https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=490682454931 ]

CARLA YARBROUGH is one of Long Beach's hidden gems.  She is an award-winning documentary film producer.  She is a media professional, a former talk show host, a business entrepreneur and owner of Ten-Out-Of-Ten Productions LLC.  What you might not know is that she was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. You might not know that she was a talk show host in Stamford, Connecticut for several years before relocating to Long Beach.  You may not know that she is a member of the faculty in Communications at California State University Long Beach.  You might not know that she has been an active advisor to The Village P.r.o.j.e.c.t.s since 2007. JOYCE ONEKO, Founder of Mama Na Da Da in Kenya, an attorney by education, and one who has lived in various countries in addition to her village in Kenya. Joyce is a visionary leader, a self-starter who sees the needs of others and then moves to find a way to make a difference.  She finds supporters and connects them to each other and to the communities that can benefit from their talents. She opens the door for increasing numbers of Americans to visit her village, to learn, to teach, and to work as volunteers in the Mama Na Da Da program. She has created partnerships with  major USA universities in these efforts.   She creates, in effect, an interconnected worldwide mutually beneficial village of support.  Her focus is on empowering women and girls and she does that very well.  What you might not know is how she has overcome challenges to make that happen. LAVERNE DUNCAN, is the Executive Director of the Andy Street Community Association in Long Beach, California. Her work with this group has become an exemplar of community empowerment and youth success drawing applause from as high as the office of President Obama. . She was formerly a housing communications officer and in that role she was able to observe numerous opportunities for improvement in the Andy Street neighborhood. In true villager fashion she took it on and has led this neighborhood to success that has received national recognition.  What you may not know is that Laverne took what she had learned during her long career, reconnected with various networks and other support groups and turned it all into a wealth of social capital and action that would ultimately benefit the community. You may not know that she is one of the most respected persons in the community and in the city. You may not know that she is an advocate for social justice in all that she does. You may not know that she willingly shares her knowledge with others. COLONEL IRMA HAGANS COOPER, USAR Retired, is one of only a few African-American women to rise to the rank of Colonel. She is also a graduate of the US Army War College.  She is a respected nursing administrator and an advocate for veterans.  She is the President of the Los Angeles Chapter, National Association of Black Military Women and in that role she has inspired a new commitment to collecting the stories of lives of these women. She is positioned to not only assure the collection of these stories but also to assure that the stories become sources of information in policy-making and other relevant decision-making conversations.  What you may not know is that she is married and is a mother with adult sons. You may not know that she loves wearing her natural hair style. You may not know that she mentors young women often serving as an approachable role model.  We invite you to meet her!

TJUANA "TIA"  WALKER is a  big picture social entrepreneur.  She is a published author, owner of the Inspired  CEO, Founder of The American Riviera Woman of the Year Award - Circle of Light, and  she is an advocate for bliss and lifting others as we climb. She is an expert at connecting empowered women who share a vision of making the world a better place .  What you may not know is that she is a mother of sons. You may  not know that she is an internationally known leader and creator of networks.  You may not know that she has over 20 years of business management and marketing experience. Her exuberant energy serves as a beacon to positive thinking and proactive programs.  She brings a new excitement to "making a difference."

SHARON AND DAVID MCLUCAS, are a dynamic couple who have devoted their lives to finding and curating artifacts that are a part of the history of African-Americans in this country. Often using their own funds they have traveled throughout California and other parts of the United States collecting and studying items for display and interviewing persons with knowledge about their origins. DOLLY STRADER WOODSON RN is a distinguished Nursing Administrator in the Kaiser Permanente System, a retired US Army Major, a leading  Missionary in First A.M.E. Church in Oakland, California and throughout the district, a strong community advocate addressing issues of re-gentrification and its potential impact on African-Americans in the area, and a world traveler. Dolly has unselfishly volunteered her time providing pro bono health services in Villages in Ghana, most recently traveling with the Village P.r.o.j.e.c.t.s to Senya Beraku, Ghana.  She took this as an opportunity to introduce her daughter fully into the realm of community service and of learning from and with persons from diverse cultural perspectives. She is an exemplar of a "role model" in her own home as well as in the community.  What you may not know about Dolly is that she loves to work with young people and she is a champion of their success. You may not know that she willingly shares her knowledge with others. You may not know that she seeks ways to prepare others to also make a difference. You may not know that she loves going on cruises. You may not know that she is equally comfortable in formal social situations and in on the ground work. She is definitely a woman who makes a difference "Lifting as we Climb!"

ERNIE BRIDGES is a member of the faculty at Fullerton College and at California State University, Fullerton.  He is well-known on both campuses for his commitment to African-American student success, and his heralded work in Ethnic Studies. He has consistently championed ethnic study programs to provide them with opportunities that otherwise would not be available to them.  His impact on the education of his students is legendary.  Additionally, he is an active participant and leader in coordinating community health fairs concerts and other events. He works with Omega Psi Phi fraternity  to bring their talents into the community. What you may not know is that he is an ordained Deacon  in his church. You may not know that he mentors and seeks mentors for his church members. You may not know that he connects persons and resources from throughout South LA County and North Orange County to make a difference in the success opportunities.  We invite you to meet him,

CALISTA KELLY, is a student at Claremont Graduate University working towards a PhD in Education. She has not only distinguished herself as a student, but also as a true scholar-practitioner.  She noticed that that  some talented African-American students were not continuing to complete their PhD's after enrolling in the program. After further study she determined that for many the underlying reason for not completing the program was a lack of financial resources. She continued her quest to find a way to assist in removing that barrier. It was that persistence that led to the establishment of the Black  Scholars Fellowship  Program at CGU. She has raised almost $30,000 so far and anticipates doubling that amount. Her work is historic not only at Claremont but also at many other colleges and universities that may be losing talented students due to a lack of necessary financial assistance.  What you may not know is that Calista grew up in Georgia in a family that thrived on leadership in helping others to succeed. You may not know that she is a graduate of Paine College, an HBCU with a history of creating such leaders.  You may not know that her sister is a physician and that she too believes in "Lifting as we Climb!"  You may not know that Calista is increasingly gaining support necessary to launch this legendary Black Scholars program. HISTORIC WATTS,  is an exemplary Facebook page.  This is our first award given for a Social Media presence. "Historic Watts"presents a series of photos with a brief historical back story for each one. The initial postings are expanded as others join in adding their recollections and often providing a more broadly informed historical perspective from those who have actually lived their experience.  This site provides an opportunity to tell one's own narrative and provides us all with enlightened learning opportunities. This page provides a very proactive use of Social Media in a way that can certainly make a positive impact. Visit them on Facebook and learn more on May 1.

Dr. WAYNE DOWNEY, was born with Cerebral Palsy, and biracial. He said that was a combination of challenges that over the years he had to meet.  He has become one of the most vocal and respected advocates for the rights of persons who have been labeled disabled. He has also become a mentor to many persons and has declared a lifelong commitment to making a difference in as many lives as possible. He is a member of the faculty at Santa Rosa College.  You might know that he has an attendant to assist him and  that he uses a wheelchair to get around. You may not know that he is a very adventurous person who loves to travel and enjoy new experiences.  You may not know what challenges he faced when he was completing written assignments compared to persons who simply because of the physical skills at their disposal did not experience. You may not know that he is really a fun person to be around filled with lots of stories.  We invite you to meet him.

VIRGIE WADE  is one of the early advisors to the Village P.r.o.j.e.c.t.s. Now in her 80's she continues to distinguish herself as a respected leader in her community, and as a confidant and advisor to many who are in various influential positions. She has resided in the same community for decades and consistently advocates for the success of the community and for all who reside there. Her approach to the realities of everyday life has been the source of grassroots mentoring so greatly needed in today's neighborhoods.

BOBBIE SMITH  is a long time resident of Long Beach. She has earned well-deserved recognition in every role that has come before her.  She served as a legendary librarian, then she became the first African-American to be elected to the School Board. Then recently a local school was renamed in her honor. She reaches out and touches the spirit of young people often garnering their undivided attention with her gentle spirit, as she did recently while reading to a group at the Bobbie Smith Elementary School. Dr. THELMA DAY is the Dean, Academic Affairs at The Los Angeles Community College District. Her role propels her into the realm of being a role model for many first generation college students as well as members of the community.  Through it all she remains approachable.  By her actions everyday she  brings her background and knowledge into the realm of those persons who may not have experienced the same circumstance of privilege. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.  We invite  you to meet her and to hear more about her strategies for Making a Difference.

JOHN BROWN, an executive associate with the Bedford Group with a keen eye for community development. He has brought his amazing talents for seeing possibilities to the local, national and international forefront.  What you may not know about him is that despite his busy life style over many years he has remained connected to his community and to his church.   You may not know is that John Brown quietly offers valuable advice to young entrepreneurs and others who are looking for opportunities to learn more about the world of business, development, and investments. What you may not know is that he is a master at teaching through story-telling bringing to life certain lessons that can only be taught in that manner. RON HASSON is a national board member of the NAACP. As the long-standing President of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP, he is actively connected to various other chapters throughout the region.  He was also a leader in the launching of the NAACP Image Awards and continues active in its efforts.  In his role with the NAACP and his life long commitment to social justice, he has received numerous accolades. His support of veterans has been applauded as well as his support of various other community programs. He speaks candidly when addressing often difficult issues.  He is applauded for his service to his community and to his familystanding as an internal role model in both situations.

BOBBY MCDONALD  is an extraordinary leader who has made community service a way of life.  He is the President of the Orange County Black Chamber. He is a generational member of The famed Buffalo Soldiers. His foot prints of  community leadership can be found throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego County and beyond. What you may not know is that he is one who builds bridges connecting various groups. You may not know of his work with assisting disabled veterans. CAROLYN KENNEDY  is an award winning entrepreneur, business woman, non-profit executive, advocate for pride in African Ancestry.  She has launched many group homes throughout various parts of the Washington DC area. Together with her husband Attorney Kofi Agyapong, they have reached out consistently to various communities. She is mentoring her son through the process of nonprofit development as she has done for countless other community members across the years.  Carolyn serves on the Board of Directors of AKO Studios.  What you may not know is that Carolyn is the first cousin to 2014 Villager Award Recipient, Lt. Colonel Patricia Jackson-Kelley.  You may not know that she and her husband have traveled to his home country of Ghana across the years, and that he has launched a nonprofit designed to assist others to reconnect. We invite you to meet her.

KEN HILL,  is a community organizer, a respected community advocate, a community supporter and one who gets the word out  His actions redefine the phrase  'African-American  community' to be anywhere African-Americans are found. His most recent project is that of securing funding to restore and keep a neighborhood library of Black History in his hometown.  He is the go-to person when events benefitting African Americans are  happening and his ability to get the word out is legendary. He is married to June Hill RN.   What you might not know is that Ken and June have traveled the United States stopping all along the way visiting every monument and other reference to Black History they could find. You might not know that he is an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a booster to Chi Eta Ph Sorority Inc.  We invite you to meet him!

ROBERTA JENKINS AND DR. MATTHEW JENKINS are a couple who have committed their life to making a difference in the lives of others. They have done that at levels that range from high level policy influence, to grassroots support of emerging entrepreneurs, to working with youth to close opportunity gaps. Their work is laudable for many reasons, but most notably here because the outcomes are clearly measurable. Those who have been fortunate to heed their insights stand as  testimony to their wisdom. Those who have experienced their leadership finesse have themselves grown as leaders. Those who have been fortunate enough to call them mom and dad have learned life's sometimes tough lessons and successfully moved forward.  What you might not know is that Dr. Jenkins served as the Interim President at Tuskegee University creating the bridge to continued success for this historic university.  You might not know that Roberta served as a member of the Board of Visitors at Claremont Graduate University and a member of the Foundation Board of Governors at California State University, Long Beach.  You may not know that had it not been for their support many programs that benefit this community may not have come to fruition. You may not know that both Roberta and Matt are graduates of Tuskegee.  The very presence of this dynamic couple is a source of inspiration and motivation.  Their life is their legacy.

CAROLYN SMITH WATTS is a leader of leaders. She has distinguished herself through her service to, and advocacy for, others. She empowers women by connecting them to power and by creating grassroots networks that become a source of direct information. She has received awards in the past and continues to move forward with a renewed energy. Her strategies have been described as "success building." PATRICIA REED CUNNINGHAM is a rising star in the arena of international experience advocacy. She recently returned from South Africa with a delegation exploring meaningful project opportunities with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.  She candidly expressed her enthusiasm and advocacy for increasing involvment of other organizations in expanding their activities on the continent.  Patricia is a retired senior Non-Commissioned Officer in the US Army, and served as a senior administrator in the LA County health care systems for decades.  She is an active member and leader in the LA YWCA and countless other organizations.  She consistently encourages African American  young women to seek their greatest opportunities and connects them with networks to support them in those efforts.  She is now expanding that opportunity pool to include others of African ancestry.   She knows how to make a difference and she willingly shares her strategies with others. "Lifting as we Climb!"
