Discovering Dave: Spirit Captured in Clay
Today, Edgefield is known as the 'Home of Ten Governors' but in Dave's lifetime, the economy was built on agriculture where slaves toiled in the hot summer sun and damp winter rains. With the discovery of 'superior clay' in 1809 by Dr. Abner Landrum, Edgefield, South Carolina would soon become known for the production of stoneware pottery. This documentary revolves around the story of the Edgefield slave potter Dave who, as a valuable commodity, created beautiful pottery during the turbulent 1800s. Producing thousands of pots in his lifetime Dave also inscribed words, verses, inscriptions, and signed many of his vessels. The story is a testament to his will to be heard and leave his mark for the ages even at risk of punishment. [Director; Mark Albertin ** Category: Documentary ** Runtime: 49 min.]
