Springfolk 2015 Belfast ME
*Because weather forced the cancellation of the "Winterfolk" mini-festival this February, the event is being re-born as "Springfolk," with the same line-up of performers that was set for February.*
SPRINGFOLK, a one day mini-festival, was a huge success in its first year last January, with three acts playing to a sold-out audience in Cape Porpoise. Building on that momentum, Brittany Haas, Owen Marshall, and Joe K. Walsh (Springfolk's host band) are back with a new lineup of exceptional acoustic musicians. It features three acts with roots and strong connections to the Maine scene: Haas/Marshall/Walsh, featuring celebrated fiddler Brittany Haas and two of the brightest lights in the Maine acoustic music scene in mandolinist Joe K. Walsh and guitarist Owen Marshall; Grant Gordy, bluegrass/jazz guitarist who's practically made Maine his second home; and Ellie Buckland and Isa Burke, two charismatic and versatile singers/players/writers who sprung from the fertile folk scene in rural Maine and who are now making a name for themselves in Boston.
In Brittany Haas, Owen Marshall, and Joe K. Walsh we find a veritable folk music power trio: three masters of old-time, Celtic, and bluegrass music, each a widely known virtuoso on their chosen instrument (fiddle, guitar, and mandolin) joining up to explore the overlapping cross-pollinated common ground in between these three strains of folk music. Bringing years of experience playing all over the globe with numerous beloved acoustic acts such as Crooked Still, the Gibson Brothers, Joy Kills Sorrow, Abigail Washburn, and The Press Gang, this trio creates a body of music as electric as any acoustic band can hope to be.
Brooklyn-based guitarist Grant Gordy was raised on his father's roots and blues guitar playing, and was drawn to the guitar early on as a means of personal expression and intellectual curiosity. Moving to Colorado as he entered his 20s opened his musical horizons as he began playing innumerable gigs with local musicians in a wide range of different styles. Being asked to assume the guitarists' role in the fabled David Grisman Quintet, a spot previously held by such guitar notables as Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Frank Vignola and Mike Marshall, firmly established Gordy as one of the preeminent young voices on guitar. Just ask his former boss, David Grisman, who says Gordy "belongs to the new elite of American acoustic practitioners who are pushing the ever-expanding envelope of a musical frontier."
The Wiles are, Ellie Buckland and Isa Burke, two fiddlers and singer-songwriters who love traditional music and close harmonies. With two fiddles, two guitars, and two intertwining voices, they perform old folk songs, new Americana, and original songs in an acoustic roots style. They met at a fiddle camp in the woods of Maine, their shared home state, and are now both studying at Berklee College of Music. Whenever possible, they are joined by a fellow Mainer, Mali Obomsawin on bass. They bring heart, soul, energy and depth to honest music that blends the old and the new.
