Students in the program are thrilled to explore the world of Shakespeare. This play--considered one of Shakespeare's problem plays--presents a wonderful challenge for young actors. The play deals with issues of hypocrisy, religious fervor, politics, and the abuse of power. In Measure for Measure, Shakespeare sends a benign (but clueless) ruler, Duke Vincentio, into a quest to find out the true nature of his domain by giving his power to Angelo, his most law-abiding advisor, and disguising himself as a friar to observe the consequences. Hilarity, betrayal, confusion and death ensue. Angelo decides to rule with an iron fist until a young soon-to-be nun becomes his undoing.
For this production, director Maria Aladren has decided to set this world in the sophisticated glamour of a 1930's Vienna, just before the Nazi invasion. The duke has become a duchess, and the joie-de-vivre of the Art Deco movement permeates the set and costumes.
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall", the duchess' right-hand woman says. And students in the program are challenged to find the dark humor in the all-too-human foibles of morality and law.
"When I first thought about Shakespeare I would picture Victorian era styles. But now I know what they don't always teach in class, that Shakespeare is more relevant than I would have originally thought. Hypocrisy is something I don't like now, so think about it in the context of this play. Heads roll, fights break out, people are tattooed, and go undercover like spies."
"If I try to explain this show to you it might just sound like a Shakespearean tragedy, but its a comedy. And thats where the fun begins. All I have to say is Shakespeare is one clever dude.
"The Grand Budapest hotel man. A Shakespeare Grand Budapest inspired hypocritical show."
In the MCVTS Theatre conservatory, young artists pursue their love of acting, playwriting, and technical production; providing a practical and theoretical foundation for students seeking excellence in the performing arts.
