Miserere
Program: "Miserere": Spanish Baroque Sacred Cantatas by José de Nebra (1792-1768), featuring his "Miserere mei, Deus" (Have mercy on me, oh Lord) for two sopranos, two violins, cello and organ and "Escala de la Gloria" (The Path to Glory) as well as his contemporary Juan Manuel de la Puente's (1692-1753) cantata "De una Beldad Soberana (of Sovereign beauty)". Nebra was an organist and wrote most of his sacred works for the Royal Chapel in Madrid dedicated to "el santísimo" (the holy one). Cantatas were musical pieces in which the voice was the protagonist as opposed to Sonatas which were instrumental pieces. The tradition of devotional cantatas with accompaniment instruments such as the harpsichord, organ or even plucked instruments, dedicated to Jesus Christ and God in secular language goes back to the 1500. By Nebra's time these pieces were performed with a bass obligato and concerted instruments such as recorders and violins, and were accepted in church settings due to their sacred content. A 30 min pre-concert lecture will be offered by Salomé Sandoval @ 7pm in the hall, open to the public. Reception to follow the concert.
