Soapmaking with Saipua
An introduction to Cold Process soapmaking. This means making soap from scratch with vegetable oils and lye, also known as sodium hydroxide. We'll cover important safety issues and the chemistry that causes caustic lye and fatty acids to combine and make soap!
After learning the science behind the soap, we'll work together to make a fresh batch of our own. We'll adorn our homemade soap with fresh farm botanicals and send everyone home with a bar! Each participant will also receive a sample of Saipua soap.
**Each person should bring a 1 quart cardboard milk carton to pour soap into so that it can be carried home.
This class will be led by Susan Ryhanen. She is the sole soapmaker for Saipua, Inc. and has been making soap since 1997. A former home economics teacher and librarian, she is also an avid crafter.
