Grand Harmonie: Mixed Media
"Mixed Media" is an adventurous exploration of unexpected instrument combinations.   In Hummel's Andante and Rondo (realized by Pyle/Roucek/Berry), we imagine the composer working out sketches for his concerto for the new and unusual keyed trumpet, accompanied by fortepiano and violin.  Devienne's charming Sonate en Quatuor matches up the flute, viola, horn, and fortepiano for a three-movement frolic through playful musical structures.  Anchoring the program are two works by Mozart: Sonata in D for Violin and Piano, K.7, composed when he was just eight years old, and the monumental Quintet for Piano and Winds in Eb major, K.452, a work Mozart himself described in a 1784 letter as "the best thing that I have written as yet in all my life."  By performing on period instruments, Grand Harmonie's musicians reveal the mesmerizing possibilities of such unusual sonic forces - just as Mozart, Devienne, and Hummel imagined them.

About the performers:

Grand Harmonie is a groundbreaking ensemble bringing a fresh, spontaneous voice to period instrument performance.   In three sensational seasons, Grand Harmonie has made a dynamic impact throughout the Northeast, with appearances at many of the region's important performance halls, galleries, concert series, and universities.  Its members are dedicated to historically-informed performances of music from Mozart to Brahms on original instruments, in concerts ranging from intimate salon-style events to full-scale orchestral programs and operas.  The Grand Harmonie sound has been hailed by critics as "delicate and gauzy" (New York Times), "tight and energetic" (Boston Globe), and "lusty, rhythmic, and rustic - theirs was early music with a stomp" (Hub Review).

Sylvia Berry has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the US, the UK, Canada, The Netherlands, and Italy.  Since moving to Boston in 2005 she has been performing regularly in the area, quickly becoming a favorite in Boston and beyond by engaging her audiences with informative commentary about the music and the instruments she plays.  Benjamin Dunham of Early Music America stated of a recent solo appearance: " [she] revealed a poetic sensibility and a willingness to draw listeners in with spaces to pause and reflect.  These qualities contrasted nicely with up-tempo movements, which were handled with verve," while her work in Opera Boston's production of La Clemenza di Tito led Lloyd Schwartz to write in the Boston Phoenix, "Special applause for continuo fortepianist Sylvia Berry, [who played] as if she were one of the actors."  Her debut recording Haydn: The London Sonatas was released on the Acis label this year, to impressive critical acclaim.  This recording features a piano built in 1806 (#3448) by the London firm John Broadwood and Son, restored in 2010 by Dale Munschy.
