Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front Tuesday, March 24, 7:30pm

A coming-of-age story which follows the journey of five Israeli high school graduates who are drafted into the army to defend their country. At the age of 18, away from their homes, families and friends, these young individuals undergo a demanding, inspiring journey, revealing the core of who they are and who they want to be. Beneath the Helmet illustrates how these young men and women are defending not only their homes, but also the values of peace, equality, opportunity, democracy, religious tolerance and women's rights.

Panelists include: a Soldier/Officer from the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), Noa Meir from the Israel Action Center (Jewish Community Relations Council/JCRC) and Yakir Daniel, Jewish Agency Israel Fellow, GMU Hillel. Additional support from Project Welcome Home, a JCCNV initiative.
The 15th annual Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival, powered by the JCCNV, will screen more than a dozen contemporary Jewish-themed and/or Israeli-made feature films that explore identity and place in the world. Festival home from March 19-29 is Angelika Film Center and Café at Mosaic. Opening night on March 19 features the new documentary Above and Beyond; other films to be screened are 24 Days, Apples from the Desert, Arlo & Julie, Beneath the Helmet-From High School to the Home Front, Disobedience-The Sousa Mendes Story, God's Slave, The Green Prince, Kidon, Life as a Rumor, Magic Men, The Outrageous Sophie Tucker, The Prince of Egypt, and Touchdown Israel-Tackle Football in the Holyland. Single tickets are $12; senior (60+), active military and under 30 are $10; an all-access pass (excluding the opening event) is $64-$70; the closing night event is $14-$18. Online sales through Brown Paper Tickets; tickets will also be on sale at the door starting one hour prior to each screening.
This is the only screening of this film.
