Magic Men (Haben Shel Elohim) Friday, March 20, 11am Saturday, March 28, 8:40pm
Directed by Erez Tadmor & Guy Nattiv Israel | 2014 | 100 minutes | Hebrew with subtitles | Feature
When the aging Avraham, a jaded, secular Holocaust survivor, decides to return to his native Greece to find the man who offered shelter and taught him magic during WWII, he is compelled to bring his son Yehuda, a devout Hassidic rapper, as his guardian. Father and son are forced to confront their prickly relationship with the help of a kindhearted prostitute. So begins a cross-cultural, cross-generational road trip as these richly-conceived characters search for absolution and reconciliation. Punctuated by enchanting moments of humor and affection, the film is also animated by spectacular panoramas of the Adriatic coast and a vibrant, Greek-infused musical score.
The 15th annual Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival, powered by the JCCNV, will screen more than a dozen contemporary Jewish-themed and/or Israeli-made feature films that explore identity and place in the world.
