Fine Line Comedy Monthly Workshop
The First Five Seconds with Jackie Arko
Are you making the most out of the first few moments of your scenes? Maybe you're feeling stuck in an almost transactional "offer-accept" rut, or you want to experiment with more initiation techniques? The first five seconds of a scene are powerful fractions of time that are easy to underestimate. They can easily begin to feel rote or utilitarian (Player A: "Here, let's exist in this premise!" Player B: "Yes! And also here's more about this premise!"). They can be awkwardly inactive and neutral until someone leans on a crutch (Player A: ".......So, I'm really glad you decided to go out with me.") They can be flushed down the toilet completely (Player A: "Hey, what's up?" Player B: "Not much, what's up with you?"). And hey - it doesn't have to be that way! Because by coming in confident and making clear choices - physical or verbal, dynamic or subtle - those first five seconds of any improv scene can virtually propel you and your scene partner into a new reality.
Using a variety of acting techniques, Fine Line Comedy instructor Jackie Arko will teach improvisers to approach those first five seconds with more intent, openness, agreement, and purpose. Whether you're looking to gain more confidence, be quicker off the editing block, or learn new initiation techniques, this workshop will give you the tools you need to maximize those few precious seconds, making the scenes that follow them richer and more grounded. This workshop will be offered at First Church Cambridge (11 Garden Street in Cambridge), in the Choir Room from 7-9pm.
