Nautilus Music-Theater - Northern Voice Festival
Since 1986, Nautilus Music-Theater has supported the artistic growth of music-theater artists who create, develop, and produce new operas and other forms of music-theater that are emotionally expansive, dramatically engaging, and spiritually stimulating. Three Ivey awards have applauded our "astonishing story telling ability and unique approach to music-theater", calling our productions "stunning collaborations" with "a wonderful blend of music and acting  simply stellar mesmerizing performance with vocal chops to die for." Our monthly ROUGH CUTS works-in-progress series are always a creative treat, and our Composer-Librettist Studios and annual Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute have made major contributions to the Twin Cities arts community.

For our appearance in the Northern Voice Festival, we offer contrasting theatrical cantatas:

FUGITIVE SONGS
"Reasons to Run"
by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller

REQUIEM FOR A BUTTHEAD:
A nu-wave a cappella love story
Created by Gunnar Madsen and
Richard Greene from THE BOBS

SKETCHES OF A BABYSITTER
Musings on motherhood
Created by Christina Ham
and Gregory Theisen

First, we open with a rousing ensemble number "Reasons to Run" from FUGITIVE SONGS, by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller, a piece we recently performed with the St Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists.

We commissioned REQUIEM FOR A BUTTHEAD over 20 years ago from the new wave a cappella group THE BOBS; it playfully explores the satisfactions and the risks of addictive relationships.

SKETCHES OF A BABYSITTER was created in our Composer-Librettist Studio last year, and is being re-visited as a work-in-progress seed of a yet-to-be-developed longer piece.

The vocalists include Joey Clark, Emily Gunyou Halaas, Andrea Leap, Joel Liestman, Kym Chambers Otto, Jim Ramlet, and KrisAnne Weiss; musical direction is provided by Jerry Rubino.
