OVation - Northern Voice Festival
"Where there is Light in the Soul!"
Join OVation for an emotionally stirring exploration of faith and community. If you follow the news, you could easily get the impression that "the church" is at war with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Without minimizing the impact and efforts of some faith communities in fighting against equal rights for LGBT citizens, it's important to remember that the voices of the many communities that are supportive are also suppressed or under-represented in the mainstream press. As members of OneVoice Mixed Chorus, we come from many faith traditions, and have arrived at many different destinations with regard to faith. For many LGBT individuals, faith is a foremost element of our being, but to be open and out in our faith communities can be fraught with uncertainty about whether we will be accepted or shunned. Many faith communities have made sweeping efforts in the past few decades to ensure that the message of acceptance is foremost, and that LGBT people will always be welcome. "Where There is Light in the Soul!" celebrates these dialogues with traditional and contemporary music reclaiming the expression of faith, and honoring the many faith communities that have embraced all who would join them in seeking the divine.
"Where There is Light in the Soul!" is not a typical performance of sacred music. Pieces are carefully selected to tell very personal stories of engagement with faith and celebrate the beauty of a welcoming humanity. Singers also share some of their experiences and beliefs and ways in which music has helped them to connect to their spirituality. Where There Is Light in the Soul! includes a stirring arrangement of "How Can I Keep From Singing?" originally performed by Minnesota ensemble Dare to Breathe, St Paul composer Elizabeth Alexander's inspiring "Where There is Light in the Soul", Durufle's contemplative meditation on charity and love "Ubi Caritas", Canadian Larry Folk's aching evocation of "The Gathering of Friends", Bobby McFerrin's daring setting of the "23rd Psalm" in honor of his mother, and secular musical celebrations of Sufi prayer and meditation from Sangeet Gellhorn. "What a Wonderful World" and "Over the Rainbow" are also among the secular works resonating with these themes of peace and acceptance and celebrating the LGBT experience.

As members of OVation, One Voice's ambassador ensemble, we perform in our Minnesota communities throughout the year, and fully half of our community engagement performances are in faith communities. These communities range across a broad stripe of belief, from conservative and reform Judaism, to denominational protestants in Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Mennonite communities, and of course long-standing support in the Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ.
