The Spacial Dynamics Institute in Mechanicville, NY welcomes Jeffrey Bernstein, one of Southern California's pre-eminent choral conductors, to offer a workshop in singing and movement with the Institute's founder Jaimen McMillan from February 27 to March 2, 2015. The workshop, called "Space to Sing", is designed to enrich participants' experience of the spacial aspects of singing. "Using the principles of Spacial Dynamics, we can bring freedom and power to our singing and to the community we sing with," McMillan says. McMillan and Bernstein have been exploring the interplay between music and movement together since Bernstein happened upon a movement course McMillan was teaching in Pasadena last year. Bernstein asked if he could improvise a musical accompaniment, and the result was inspired. Intrigued, the duo met again several times, finding connection in what they called "the space between the tones". Bernstein, who specializes in the refinement of the a capella choral sound and in the performance of major choral-orchestral repertoire, sees numerous applications of this collaborative work. He plans to bring aspects of Spacial Dynamics to the professional conductors he works with in the future; but first, he welcomes the opportunity to explore singing and movement in a workshop setting. "Singing is the most basic, the most natural, and the most personal way of making music," says Bernstein. "Singing together with others can be a powerful and transformative experience." The workshop is open to singers of all levels and runs February 27th through March 2nd at the Arts Center on the Hudson in Mechanicville, NY. Course fee: $500.
Level II Course ~ Open to the Public. No prior experience is required. All are welcome! Graduates of SDI Level I Training will receive Level II credit.
