Young Muses Summer Band Camp
A 2-week Non-Audition Ensemble Performance Course
June 8-19, 9a-3p, Mon-Friday
Facilitated by Kaya Martínez, Réshanda Billy and Audry Smith
This camp is designed for girls ages 8-12 to enjoy vocal and instrumental music making in a joyous, non-competitive atmosphere culminating in a final performance for friends and family at 3pm on June 19th.
Prior experience is welcome for this camp, but not required. Included are voice, hand percussion, mallet percussion, and basic music theory. Rehearsals will build technical facility and augment musicianship while emphasizing creativity, improvisation and collaboration. In addition to voice and percussion study, a keyboard, guitar, electric bass and a limited number of horns are available upon request to musicians with at least one year of prior experience, and those who study on their own woodwind, brass or string instruments are invited to bring them to the rehearsals as well.
Sliding Scale Tuition: Young Muses Summer Band camp is a donor funded program operating on limited resources, so we ask those who can afford to pay full price to do so. Full tuition for for the 2-week camp, 9a-3p daily is $350; however, we realize that not everyone can afford to pay full tuition so we have a sliding scale that includes a range of amounts. Please consider your family income, resources, and dependents in the household when choosing your requested reduced tuition amount. Help us help as many deserving girls as possible by paying what you can. Thank you!
The camp is being hosted by Encore Academy (4217 Orleans Ave.) Healthy snacks and purified water will be provided and all materials are included in tuition. ABOUT THE FACILITATORS:
Camp Coordinator Kaya Martínez is a musician~educator dedicated to nurturing creativity and building community through the arts. After more than 15 years of service in the classroom, Ms. Martínez founded Musicollaborative Exploriential Music Learning for All Ages in 2013 to make high quality culturally relevant music education accessible to New Orleans' children and families. Ms. Martínez enjoys holding space for learners of all ages to grow in their understanding in, of and about music and the other arts through a hands-heart-head facilitation style that incorporates exploration, imitation, improvisation and creation. In addition to her masters degree in music education and certification in Orff Schulwerk, Ms. Martínez draws upon a diverse background in both instrumental and vocal music, visual arts and dance to design engaging learning opportunities that dissolve boundaries, stimulate the imagination, and foster collaboration.
Assistant facilitators Réshanda Billy and Audry Smith are certified music educators. Billy is a classically trained clarinetist with a degree in music education currently on faculty at Encore Academy and Smith holds degrees in jazz studies and piano performance and is a member of the music faculty at McGehee School.
