The Odetta Project: waterboy and the mighty world
The captivating performer and singer Justin Hicks unveils The Odetta Project: waterboy and the mighty world, produced by Kaneza Schaal. The piece explores musical, social and political legacy of Odetta Holmes (1930-2008), the legendary singer, actress, guitarist, songwriter, and activist, known as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement." Hicks harnesses the beauty and power of Odetta's music by channeling, covering and re-mixing her works and thus inviting her Majesty back to the stage.

Using music, text, sound, video, and food, Justin Hicks explores themes of identity, economics, marriage, working, and religion, through performances that range from singer/songwriter-style presentations, and recordings, to interdisciplinary and collaborative performance works involving movement and set design. His work has been featured at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Baryshnikov Arts Center, PS 122, The Julliard School, The Knitting Factory, Arlene's Grocery, Pianos and Bowery Poetry Club. He was a member of Kara Walker's 6-8 Months Space and recently completed a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council process space residency.
