Kitka presents: Ukrainian Folk Singing Workshop with Nadia Tarnawsky
Kitka presents a singing workshop with their very special guest, Seattle-based Ukrainian singer and bandurist Nadia Tarnawsky. This workshop features the ballads and songs of war and protest, exploring the hope, the pain, and the deepest meanings of Ukraine's historical conflicts, up to the present-day movement for democracy that began in Kyiv's EuroMaidan. Ability to read Cyrillic or musical notation is not required and all are welcome! An accomplished and internationally known singer and teacher of village-style Ukrainian folk singing, Nadia currently sings with longtime musical collaborator Brandon Vance (Scottish fiddle) in the Celtic and Eastern European folk music ensemble the two founded in Seattle, called Alchymeia. She has studied Eastern European singing for nearly two decades with teachers Mariana Sadowska, Lilia Pavlovska, Merita Halili, Maria Bebelekova and Donka Koleva. Nadia taught multiple Ukrainian village-style singing workshops in New York between 2007 and 2012 as part of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance's "Ukrainian Wave" Community Cultural Initiative, which culminated in thematic concerts of polyphonic song at The Ukrainian Museum in Manhattan's East Village. In 2011 Nadia sang with Ensemble Hilka under the tutelage of ethnomusicologist Dr. Yevhen Yefremov, in a series of concerts marking the 25th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, reviving the folksong repertoire of the region.
Born to Ukrainian émigrés in Ohio, Tarnawsky's first language was Ukrainian. Tarnawsky grew up attending Ukrainian Saturday school, Ukrainian summer camps, folk dance rehearsals and of course singing.
Nadia holds a B.S. in music education and a B.A. English from Case Western Reserve University. As a vocalist, Tarnawsky works in a variety of difference genres, including classical and musical theater. In 2011, she received a fellowship from Artist Trust for folk art. Prior to that, she taught Ukrainian folk song at the Center for Traditional Music and Dance in New York City. Tarnawsky makes a point of singing with her whole body. "The way that I teach voice involves a lot of resonance. The thing that you use to make sound is your bones and your body. Your voice is not just this thing in your throat," she says. "It's kind of like saying a violin is just strings. You need everything to make the sound."
Participants in Nadia's workshops feel the full-body singing workout. Tarnawsky starts off with a series of exercises that allow all parts of the body to vibrate when singing. She says that powerful, resonant nature of folk singing is something to be felt from head to toe.
