The City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County combined currently has more than 250 boards and commissions with more than a thousand appointed members who oversee key Los Angeles city and county agencies and advise the mayor and the Board of Supervisors on core policies and programs that impact the quality of life for local residents. Decisions taken made by these agencies have a major impact on policies and projects throughout the city and county, but representation on and influence of these boards and commissions by community members is challenging. In terms of appointing grassroots leaders, elected officials report that they lack qualified pools of candidates with the time, technical expertise, and interest in serving on commissions.
With a near 40-year track record of investment and training among LA's diverse community leadership, Liberty Hill Foundation is launching its 2015 Commissions Training Program to address these challenges and build power in Los Angeles city and county communities, including our One-Day Training Intensive.
This year's Commission Appointments One-Day Training Intensive focuses on Los Angeles County's appointed public commissions with a full-day, large-group session for community leaders from across sectors and issues areas. Sessions will be facilitated by well-known county advocates who have served on county commissions, worked with county electeds, and staffed county agencies. Former commissioners will talk with you about setting priorities and getting the right information for decision making as a new commissioner. You'll also have the chance to network with those who have significant knowledge about the appointment process.
