Harlem Renaissance Revisited With a Gospel Flavor
The play is performed by the Oscar Micheaux Family Theater Company and takes place in the early 1920s in Harlem, NY. A party is being held at Ms Evelyn's, a popular speak easy in Harlem to welcome Langston Hughes back from writing and becoming a celebrity while in Paris. Many of the artistic pioneers during this Era struggled with leaving America, their home and stayed and struggled together to be heard and to use their talents with one of the high lights being the struggle of a young woman who goes to audition at the Cotton Club and is turned away and not allowed to audition because her skin is too dark. She is encouraged to not give up by the others and she gets a call to come to Hollywood by a young famous music composer and band leader.
