The L.A. Choral Lab presents
MISSA URBIS ANGELORUM
"Mass of the City of Angels"
Sunday, March 22, 2015, 7:30 PM
Zipper Concert Hall, Downtown Los Angeles, CA

Yi-Ju Lai, Accompanist

MISSA URBIS ANGELORUM is a concert performance project of the L.A. Choral Lab. The concert features a brand-new 45-minute six-movement work for SATB chamber choir, piano, cello, and timpani. The piece is the result of a co-commission of six Southern California composers. On March 22, the L.A. Choral Lab will premiere this work alongside a mass by Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria.

The Latin title MISSA URBIS ANGELORUM translates to "Mass of the City of Angels." The piece makes use of the Mass, a musical structure which composers have used since the Renaissance; it is a present-day contribution to this centuries-old tradition. Six Los Angeles classical composers have each contributed a movement to the project.

I. Ave Maria (Nove Deypalan)
II. Kyrie (David Stal)
III. Gloria (Alex Tovar)
IV. The Human Journey [;Credo]; (Jeffrey Bernstein)
V. Blessed is He [;Sanctus]; (Dave Volpe)
VI. Agnus Dei (Max Mueller)

THE L.A. CHORAL LAB is a Los Angeles-based chamber choir dedicated to the performance and promotion of new classical choral music. The 24-member ensemble was formed in early 2014 by Artistic Director Michael Alfera.

"Natural showmanship and sincere enthusiasm make obsolete the gimmicks other new groups tend to cling to.  This ensemble is just really damn good, and they let music and skill and passion speak for them." Lauri Goldenhersh, LaurisList.net

Their inaugural performance, INTRODUCING THE L.A. CHORAL LAB, was given at Zipper Concert Hall in September 2014, and it featured music from as far back as the 15th century and as recent as 2012. The group is proud to close off its first season with Missa Urbis Angelorum, and it looks forward to many more successful seasons of music-making in the years ahead.
