"This is Ireland." -Grace Gifford, Act One Scene 1
"Summon your strength, boys. For tomorrow we are messengers." -Patrick Pearse, Act One Scene 8
The all-new musical GUNS OF IRELAND tells the story of two hauntingly similar rebellions, the Wexford Rebellion of 1798 and the Easter Rising of 1916. On one side, the reluctant but brilliant general Father John Murphy leads his friends and allies against a British Empire still aching from a defeat in the Americas. On the other, the poet Joseph Plunkett casts his lot with a group of rebels against the wishes of his childhood sweetheart, Grace Gifford. Both rebellions are doomed to fail, but not before the British are forced to learn a hard lesson about the indomitability of the Irish people.
Featuring a musical score that will make you laugh, cry, clap your hands and stamp your feet, GUNS OF IRELAND pays respect to the relentless courage and unquenchable joy that is uniquely Irish. Over the course of the show you will enjoy time-honored favorites such as "Danny Boy" and "Whiskey in the Jar," as well as powerful traditional songs like "The Parting Glass" and "The West's Awake." GUNS OF IRELAND also features a brand-new song, "Statue of Me," which was composed and written by Nina Powers and Jeff Payne, and which pays homage to the unsung heroes of history: the Irish women, mothers, sisters, and daughters who were all too often left behind to carry on in the wake of tragedy.
At once thematically universal and intimately local, GUNS OF IRELAND represents a theatrical experience that is a first of its kind. It was written and produced in Tri-Cities, WA, and has benefited from the contributions of Tri-Cities Prep School, Columbia Basin College, The Tri-City Herald, Red Lion Hotels, and many, many more.
Beautiful, heartrending, hopeful and tragic, GUNS OF IRELAND celebrates the universal bonds of friendship, the agony of lost love, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.
