Jazz Club Festival Presents Karla Harris sing The Dave & Iola Brubeck Songbook with Ted Howe Trio
Ted Howe was born March 6 in Boston, MA. His Uncle Oly, introduced him to both jazz and baseball. Young Ted listened to every jazz album he could find, attended many jazz concerts and quickly found his favorites among Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Dave Brubeck and Bill Evans.
Ted began studying piano in his tender teens with Harry Smith, one of the legendary founders of the Berklee College of Music. He soon became not only a student at Berklee, but a professor of piano arranging, theory and improvisation -- all before the age of 24. After a two year stint as a pianist in the Army, Ted took a gig at one of Boston's leading live entertainment venues, The Surf Supper Club where he soon became bandleader playing and conducting for some of the biggest acts of the time. He moved  his family to Atlanta where he continued performing, composing, arranging, producing and teaching. Howe has performed with include Henry Mancini, Herbie Mann, Buddy DeFranco, Bud Shank, Steve Allen, Buddy Rich, Diahann Carroll, Zoot Simms, and Joe Williams.
Howe also joined the faculty of Georgia State University where he assisted in developing its first jazz education program.
Now living in Los Angeles, Ted continues to record, produce, arrange and perform extensively. His latest CD, Love Song, pays homage to Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and Jimmy Van Heusen in a significantly new way.
The CD includes four of his own compositions, written with his partner, lyricist and Executive Producer, Rebekah Miller. The Miller & Howe songs are lovingly sung by star of stage, film and television, Lainie Kazan, and renowned jazz baritone, Giacomo Gates. Ted's other releases include, Ellington, which evolved from his touring show which paid homage to his idol. Ted added a few tunes, playing with his longtime friends, bassist Neal Starkey and drummer Jerry Fields. The album continues to enjoy rave reviews and had a lengthy stay on the JAZZWEEK airplay chart. "Evening with Duke Ellington" began and continues to be a formidable presentation, touring colleges, jazz societies and concert venues.
Currently, Ted Howe's "Tribute to Dave Brubeck" show is receiving rave reviews in concert halls and festivals. Sit back and enjoy the piano stylings of Ted Howe.

Karla Harris. originally from St. Louis, Missouri. "Growing up, I always loved singing. As kids we'd make up shows and transcribe lyrics. There was always music around, and my Dad liked to sing in the house. My first gig was when I got paid to sing at a wedding at age 13. In high school, I was in bands and choir and played the piano well enough to accompany myself."
As a college student in the '80s, working toward a bachelor's degree in speech communications, she performed around her hometown of St. Louis with both a jazz quartet and a pop band, where she learned subtlety and swing in the former and stamina and showmanship in the latter. Her reputation as a vocalist grew, and Karla soon was performing regularly with St. Louis' busiest bands, while also putting that college degree to use working as a successful freelance writer.
In the early 2000s, Karla became more enamored with jazz. She moved to the west coast in 2005 and was welcomed into Portland, Oregon's highly regarded jazz scene. Karla became a regularly featured artist at premier jazz rooms and has performed at events such as the Newport Jazz Festival, Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, Portland Jazz Festival and Nantucket Arts Festival, gaining fans drawn by her dynamic delivery and tasty repertoire.
Karla recorded a CD in 2007 with internationally known jazz bassist Tom Kennedy, with whom she performed frequently in St. Louis. Of the recording, titled "Twice As Nice," Jazz Scene Magazine writes, "Always respectful of her American Songbook choices, Harris has superb intonation and a contemporary, appealing approach to the songs."
In 2012, Karla relocated to Atlanta. She has opened for Grammy-nominated jazz singer Kate McGarry and performed as featured vocalist with some of the area's finest bandleaders, including Joe Gransden, Kevin Bales and Ted Howe.
"It was a magical moment when Ted Howe handed me an out-of-print songbook. I knew there were words to some of Brubeck's works. I was familiar with 'Take Five' and had heard older recordings of singers performing some of his originals. I knew his music as mostly instrumentals. It was a surprise to see lyrics were written to so many of his compositions, mostly by his wife Iola. As I read through song after song with 'lyrics by Iola Brubeck', there was all this beautiful language  witty, sophisticated, romantic, wistful, hopeful, sometimes sardonic, often melancholy. Poetry in emotion. And I should mention that Dave Brubeck wrote some compelling lyrics, as well. I was hooked.
"To be able to present Dave Brubeck's music through Iola Brubeck's lyrics has been an honor and a thrill."
