Evolution of Life on Earth--Its Major Transitions -- Part 2 -- Gene Kalland
What steps did Earth's life take from its start, about four billion years ago, to the incredibly varied forms seen now? In answering this, evolutionary biologists like to focus on the major transitions that occurred in the process. These transitions are fundamental changes in the properties of organisms that set the stage for a new period of diversity and adaptation
This will be the second six-session course on the broad topic of evolution on earth. You will see an excellent DVD course with lectures given by two scientists, one a paleontologist and the other an anthropologist. They will present the research and discoveries from the fields of paleontology, geology, biology and chemistry which describe the changes in life forms over this vast time period. Following each lecture Professor Gene Kalland will lead a discussion that you will be welcome to join about what you heard in the lecture.
In these six sessions you will learn about marine and flying reptiles, birds, flowers, origin of mammals, whales and including three sessions on primate and human evolution.
Gene Kalland taught biology for over 30 years at California State University Dominguez Hills, his specialties being endocrinology and developmental biology. He earned his BA in Biology at CSU Northridge (way back then known as San Fernando Valley State College) and his PhD in Zoology at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has facilitated DVD courses for LLCC on the Universe and on Oceanography.
